Weekend visiting scenic lines during easter

Hi all

I'm looking for some advise for a trip I wish to make during weekend of 12-14th april.

I'm keen to travel on a few scenic routes such as the oban and mallaig routes.

However, they run such a poor service on sunday, that i can't plan a timetable to complete the trip and return in birmingham sunday late evening.

Can anyone advise if it would be possible to do such a trip or suggest alternatives for a weekend trip?

Would it be worth travelling up to glasgow friday, mallaig on saturday and take a slight detour returning home sunday via whitehaven?

The Cumbrian Coast is closed in between Whitehaven and Barrow on Sundays IIRC. I would heartily recommend Mallaig on the Saturday if you can get it done though, perhaps travelling back via Killie and Dumfries on Sunday and on homeward from Carlisle?

Don't forget Glasgow / Edinburgh-Preston is all buses on Sunday however, so if we knew your origin for the trips we might be able to help further

Edit - Ah, Birmingham. If you do get the train back to Carlisle via Dumfries then it'd be bus to Preston, and train onwards from there.

Edit again! There are no trains between either Glasgow and Barrhead and Killie and Carlisle on the Sunday, so you might actually need to head back east towards Edinburgh then down via York to Birmignham on XC.

I recently did Oban on Friday from Glasgow, Stayed overnight and then on the Saturday, doubled back to Crianlarich and then all the way to Mallaig and back to Glasgow. Really worth while. Should be better than mine as I'm sure there is more snow on the mountains than a month back. Lovely restaurants in Mallaig for the wait for the return and a decent harbour to walk around. If you need supplies on the Saturday, there is a supermarket of sorts at Crianlarich, just around the roadbend from the station to stock up on food/drinks etc. There should be plenty of time for you to get supplies as you wait for the train to Mallaig to arrive from the south.

Don't quite see the problem: Glasgow (0821)-Oban-Crianlarich-Mallaig (1743) then Mallaig (1010)-Edinburgh-B'ham works fine with all the scenic bits in daylight. Doing the trip in reverse I would do Ft William-Oban by bus to avoid a long wait at Crianlarich and late arrival in Oban.
