Disgrace very few direct trains and 5 hour odysseys elsewhere, why is this ?

Because they run to Edinburgh instead? Glasgow is already served by a major VT route (it's from london, yes, but interchange is possible along the way).

During the week, VT run one train every two hours via Preston.
XC also run services via York.
There are countless connection points along the way for other services.
Depending on the date you're travelling, there may well be engineering works making things more difficult during the weekend
