I agree, a bit of dirt is authentic.

Even if a loco is repainted, it doesn't take long for it to start looking grimy again. I can attest to this, given the dirt and oil already on a loco I finished only a matter of weeks ago and it's stored on shed when out of use! If a loco is stored in the open, the process will be speeded up.

I visited the Mid Hants only yesterday, I think the level of care afforded to the locos and rolling stock has improved. Wadebridge is in need of a good clean though, I'm more concerned about the increasingly deteriorating condition of Bodmin. She's been shoved towards the back of the headshunt at Roply and looks rather forlorn now. Rather sad really as it's one of my favourite locos. What is the story with Bodmin? Isn't she privately owned ? I'd be pretty miffed if my loco had been left outside without cover to rot.


To be fair the Mid Hants has no real covered storage for it's fleet, the workshop at Roply is really tight for space. A long term goal for them should really be to acquire land to build an engine or carriage shed to safeguard the condition of their rolling stock.

I agree with you Monty, MRH is so pushed for space, it would be lovely to see a train shed like the one at GWR at Toddington so the engines are all under cover & tucked away each night. The "Harry potter" walk bridge from Kings X station is being installed at Ropley & should be open in a few weeks / months.

The owner of the class 27 should either get it scrapped, sell it or push it to working order again as it's been in that state for years. Why does someone buy a loco & then not have the funds to restore it..?

A classic catch 22. The 27 gets scrapped and is no more. Some enthusiasts get worked up. The 27 gets saved and sits rusting. Some enthusiasts get worked up. In the absence of money, the best that could be done is to put it under a tarp which will afford it a minimum of protection until there's a viable solution and who knows, perhaps the owner is trying to sell it? I'd say it's a pretty niche market though.

One of the sad but true facts about preservation is that those who are quick to talk, far outweigh those who actually do the work (the majority of whom do so for love, not money). The result is far more work than there are workers to go round and most preservation railways have to prioritise. This will be based on operational needs, historical significance, etc.

I'm not having a go at anyone, just suggesting reasons why locos, stock and so on, appear to lie around getting rusty for no obvious reason.

The class 27 does have people working on it, the 71a lads work on it and ive seen them working on it, most of the work is internal, it needs bodywork repairs but has to wait its turn to get undercover to have the work done, i was told it was due to go in and have the work done but the fire in the new shed put paid to that, it will get done, but as has been said space at Ropley is at a premium.

As for Bodmin i doubt you'll see it steam at the Mid-hants again, its owned privately by John Bunch and i suspect he will move it away from the Mid-hants as soon as he can.... along with a few other steam locos he owns there.

yea bodmin wont steam at the MHR again, the class 27 is in need of major body work repairs and the class 33 is currently out of traffic with an electrical fault

Does anyone mind elaborating on the rift with John Bunch and the MHR? Feel free to PM if you do not wish to say it publicly. I am genuinely interested in the future of Bodmin and to why she has been wasting away for so long.
