The Weardale Railway has announced two exciting events for diesel locomotive enthusiasts to kick off the 2017 season, both of which will feature unusual traction.

On February 11/12 there will be a Class 31 running weekend which will feature yellow-liveried 31465 hauling passenger trains for the first time in almost a decade. This locomotive will be leaving the railway shortly after the event and is unlikely to be used on passenger services again, so this is a once in a lifetime chance to obtain haulage behind this vintage machine. Five return trips will be made from Stanhope Station to Scotch Isle Loop, a distance of about six miles, with the 31 running round at each end of the journey. The train will consist of six Mk2 coaches in InterCity livery and will be electrically heated. Stanhope station cafe will be open during the day to provide home-cooked hot and cold food. The first train will leave Stanhope Station at 0930 and all trains will stop at Frosterley and Wolsingham stations in each direction.

Two weeks later, on February 25/26, the Class 47s will have their own weekend with Scotrail-liveried 47712 Lady Diana Spencer sharing the limelight with BR green-liveried 47192. Four trains will run each day in top and tail mode with services running almost the whole length of the line from Stanhope to the outskirts of Bishop Auckland, a distance of about 15 miles. As the gradient is predominantly in one direction the locomotives will swap over after the first two runs so that each is used on the ‘uphill’ end of the train. Again Mark 2s with electric heat will be used but the rake will be strengthened to eight or nine vehicles, all in InterCity livery, to provide an authentic formation. The first train of the day will leave Stanhope at 0900 and catering will be available both at Stanhope Station and during the journey.

Event ticket prices are

One round trip Adult£ 15.00 Senior£ 13.50 Child£ 7.50 Family£ 30.00
Day Rover Adult£ 20.00 Senior£ 17.00 Child£ 10.00 Family£ 40.00
Weekend Rover Adult£ 36.00 Senior£ 30.00 Child£ 16.00 Family£ 75.00

The Weardale Railway runs for 18 miles from Bishop Auckland to Eastgate in County Durham and has its main passenger station at Stanhope (DL13 2YS). It is most famous for its ‘Polar Express’ Christmas experience but also operates heritage services throughout the summer months. The railway also operates a cafe on Stanhope Station during the summer season.

The Scotrail 47 with 8/9 coaches and the extra weight of another 47 at the back up a bank sounds very appealing, unfortunately it's miles away from me and I know I won't be able to go this time but well done for understanding what appeals to enthusiasts and good luck, I'll look forward to seeing a few clips on YouTube :)

Is the Weardale railway up and running for most of the year again?

I went on a mainline steam charter a few years ago that went up that line from Newcastle, via a roundabout route which was great. The line was good too.

Is there any time in the year when the whole line is operational? Really would like to visit but only when the whole line is in use. Thanks.

The owner of 31465 has made it reasonably clear this may be your last opportunity for a while to get it.

Required for me and about 15 miles from the house, so a round trip is in order to scoop it in.

Is it privately owned as in preserved do you know 37038? I was wondering what his plans were for it? It was quite often around Exeter in the 80s I remember it doing Barnstaple services.

They haven't run through to Bishop Auckland for a few years now

Which is a bit of a shame.

I wonder if either Pathfinder or UK Railtours will try and do a railtour for the line at some point (as I believe there is a connection to the national rail line at Bishop Auckland) *wishful thinking*

There was a good selection of charters a few years ago:

19 Feb 2010 (UKR): 67002 67029
27 Feb 2010 (Spit): 37038 37607 47826
20 June 2010 (NER): 47760 47826
16 Oct 2010 (RTC): 48151 (S) 47500
27 Aug 2012 (Path) 20308 20312
20 Oct 2012 (RTC): 61994 (S) 37706

Doubt they will now as (I think) there was ground movement which stops passenger carrying trains travelling through to Bishop

The Class 47 weekend will travel to within one third of a mile of Bishop Auckland, making 15 miles of track from Stanhope. This includes the section from the new station at Witton le Wear through Wear Valley Junction and across the Etherley viaduct which is normally only used to transfer trains from the national network.
Currently there is a land slip which precludes passenger trains running into Bishop Auckland station itself and that won't get fixed this year. However light locos and empty stock do go that way at low speed.
The section of track from Stanhope to the former Eastgate cement works, about three miles, is mothballed at the moment, mainly because there is nothing at the other end now, but there are plans for this to be re-opened at some point in the future.
Hope this helps

Sounds like there is scope for reopening and extending in both directions, hopefully in the not too distant future. I seem to recall that it is not too far to walk between the mainline station & Weardale Railway platform in Bishop Auckland. ( A through steam service, say at weekends would be really good, <Espcially if it could go through to / from Darlington> ) :D

Thanks for the info DMU, I really want to ride the line but only when fully operational.
