Weardale Railway and Stanhope Uber query

On a Saturday this Summer, I plan to travel from Bishop Auckland West to Stanhope.

The website suggests it could either be a 1960s heritage DMU or a 1980s Pacer. Does anyone have any more information regarding which it could be on any given working/date?

We rode the Weardale in May, under the green timetable. It was the Class 108 in operation that day.

I would not rely on Uber. It's theoretically available but all the site is really confirming there is that it operates in the area. Actually getting a driver to accept a job in rural Stanhppe when they're pootling about in Consett may be a challenge. I'd be more tempted to prebook a minicab for certainty.

I think the Uber website probably says this for every destination, however unlikely.

One thing you could do is a test run on the app to see if there are indeed Ubers lurking reasonably nearby.

However, if you are certain of your requirements I would probably just book a local company.

Has anyone had any recent experience on Weardale railway and got any tips?

I had a ride back in February when Northern ran from Darlington to Stanhope (reversing to access Bishop Auckland West). Very pleasant line (odd being on a 158 on a heritage railway though!) and Stanhope station was quite nice with a decent bookshop and coffee shop (sort of place I'd allow ten/fifteen minutes for a peruse and to buy a tea/coffee). There's also toilets on the station which is useful! Not that much else to see though at the Stanhope end as their depot facilities are mid-way along the line. Nothing at all at Bishop Auckland West other than a platform but the connection between it and the National Rail station is a doddle.

If you're not massively pushed for time, the 101 bus runs hourly between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope and worked well enough when I visited the Weardale Railway.

And if you get the bus you are supporting a much-needed local service. The bus stops on the main road through Stanhope: a couple of minutes walk up from the Weardale Railway station, past the old Stanhope terminus station building, now part of an industrial site. The 101 bus timetable is here.

If you have a bit of time to spare, the weather is kind and you are interested in industrial history more generally then you can walk up and have a look at the remains of Ashes Quarry, once rail-served via the Stanhope and Tyne Railway. Guide leaflet here.

(Yes, forget about Uber in Weardale. Conventional taxis are also few and far between: Weardale is not a tourist dale - it’s still largely a working dale that welcomes mainly walkers and cyclists, and people who want to shoot birds of course.)

I'm assuming that the O/P doesn't just want to get back to Bishop, as the obvious thing to do would be to stay on the trsin!

The 101 bus from Stanhope connects with the Arriva service to Durham in Crook marketplace if the OP doesn’t just want to go back to Bishop.

When I've done it, I've usually found that the timetable allows for a leisurely walk into Stanhope to catch the 101 bus back to Bishop. Card payments accepted and subject to the £2.50 NECA fare cap. This mitigates the fairly hefty turnaround that the train has in Stanhope.

I wouldn't rely on Uber in Stanhope - you may have a chance going the other way (Bishop to Stanhope) as there'll be more drivers milling around, but no guarantees as they'll likely have a fair bit of dead mileage after.

If you're connecting out of the Northern service at Bishop, the Weardale service typically waits within reason (eg. for a 10 minute delay, not for full cancellation and an hour gap).
