If I may ask; Why do the majority of people hate Pacers as much as I'm inclined to believe? I've only ridden Pacers a few times, but I've always enjoyed travelling on them! 8)
Indeed...Knowing that they are getting on a bit, I'd imagine that they are up for replacement with something else in the near future. If I could ever gather the resources together to modify them with larger ratio gear-boxes (For much faster running), pantographs and electric motors (Making them dual-fuel vehicles) then I'd have all the necessary equipment to form a new open-access WCML operator that would offer dirt cheap fares using the Ryanair principle.
Admittedly, I could imagine many VT passengers not being keen on the idea of doing Euston to Manchester in a thirty year old Leyland railbus...But it'd give a very cheap option for those who are happy to use older rolling stock...And - With my approach to railway engineering - They wouldn't be that much slower than the Pendos. I reckon that a journey time of EUS -> MAN in 2.5 hours would be a good compromise for a £5.00 walk-up fare!
