For the second week i noticed a pair of WCRC class 57 stabked at Newark Northgate

Does any one know the reason? Route learning of some kind?

Replacing I believe, contract for thunderbirds has passed from DB Cargo to WCRC.

Not sure myself whether the choice of non ETH locos as Thunderbirds is ideal

I believe there's still a DB class 67 stabled at Bounds Green depot presumably for thunderbird duties, not sure why else it would be there.

Their only role now is to clear the line, not to form occasional passsnger services. IETs have 'hotel power' and can't be fed by an ETS locomotive in any case. ETS is therefore superfluous.

I wonder if this could lead to WCRC "leasing" the Dellner Couplings back from Angel Trains for their 57/3s?

In case anyone wasn't aware of the complexities regarding the couplings on the as converted VT 57/3s, the locos were owned by Porterbrook while the design of the drop head system and couplings themselves were owned by Angel Trains.

LNER have been unable to fulfill the Thunderbird manning in its entirety due to a multitude of reasons.

WCRc have received a contract to provide thunderbirds for NR rather than LNER directly.

How did staffing work before? Would the nearest freight driver be called to it, or did the drivers sit nearby waiting to be called upon like WCRC are doing at the moment?

If it is a thunderbird surely they sit around thier base waiting for notification of an emergency from the space station then slide down a tube to take command of thier locomotive?

Serioisly: i expect thunderbird cover is part of the roster so that it can be manned instantly/asap
