WCML overrunning engineering - what's happened?

Overrunning engineering work seems to be causing a partial 2-track timetable on the south WCML until Wednesday, with the Tring semifast services and the xx13 Manchester cancelled. This appears to be caused by an incident that happened on Sunday and caused a late start-up of services (which netted me yet more Delay Repay). Most sources I've seen have described this as overrunning engineering works, but the boards at Euston on Sunday morning called it "a train incident near Tring".

Does anyone know what happened? Has something damaged points or the track perhaps?

A set of points south of the station is preventing access to Platform 4 at Tring. They were damaged in the possession at the weekend. The slow lines are open though so don’t know why the Manchester trains are cancelled.

Does this mean 2 track working is in use for any distance and the points weren’t manually locked, or that other services are cancelled than the Tring semifast?

A regular occurrence. If somebody could find a way to prevent it happening could save a lot of money every year.

Appears the xx13s were cancelled a number of times today for unrelated (and different) reasons, having checked again. A few did run. So just the Trings.
