A lot of effort has gone into stopping at Piccadilly a considerable amount of additional dispatchers have been drafted in to help with many doing overtime. Stopping works fine when everything is fine, but as we know once things start to go wrong the "junction" is not a nice place to be.

Without the :55 service to London the :15 & :35s would all be exceptionally busy.

We know about the staff and what they do.

Stopping already busy trains at Picc was stupid.
The xx55s should have run as normal with the Scottish trains non-stop.
Nothing ever goes through that narrow corridor very well, there just isn't the time and room for all those trains. Just look at all the minutes lost.
There is no capacity for delay.
I'm sure most of those passengers getting on at Piccadilly onto already busy trains really appreciated that.

Would there have been enough sets to do that? With extended journey times on the Glasgow services combined with the maintenance of an hourly frequency probably not. That is why I suspect they chose to combine the services.

Yep. They had to get through somehow but less time taken running non-stop. Which is what is normally done with diversions.
It's the capacity of the trains though. Putting 2 train loads of passengers into one on an already busy Scottish service.

Look at the delays through Deansgate yesterday. Not VTWC fault but all delays add up.
Freight had to get through as well.
Everyone did the best they could in the circumstances but there is no extra capacity.

Well I don't know for sure about the lack of sets but there were 3 Class 390s still on Longsight but they could all have had maintenance issues.
As it was and nothing to do with the good work from staff, it all went down the pan with other issues North and South.

That's not going to help overcrowding on the limited Euston-Manchester-Glasgow services and the Edinburgh connections from Preston.

Glad I read this thread especially this last bit! I commute to London every Monday and stay down here and back to North Wales on a Friday, but use the much quieter Crewe to London and London to Crewe Virgin Services originating / terminating at Manchester. I was wondering on Monday morning why my normal 09:30 from Crewe seemed to be originating in Glasgow. I decided to take the 09:24 service to Euston that had originated in Liverpool as the Glasgow to Euston services are usually a lot busier.

I assume until the work being carried out at Acton Grange is finished on 4th August that I need to avoid the normal Friday Euston xx:40 departure which now goes to Crewe, Manchester AND Glasgow.

Seems a good idea!

No it didn't. It started at Preston.
That's not what the passengers onboard who had been on the train since Glasgow said! It was redesignated with a new headcode but was still ostensibly the same train.

That may well be the case, however as far as everything else goes it is not the same train.
