The Steam loco will have come off shed prior to the train's arrival and stabled in the sidings immediately south of the station. The train will generally use Goods Loop 2 to give the staff a safe zone from the WCML. Loco detaches and runs through the Down Furness Goods to Crag Bank headshunt and stables. Steam then draws onto DFG before backing onto train. This means the loco change takes place without any impact on the passenger service.Yes, but as commented elsewhere the electric loco will draw into the platform to allow the steam loco to come off shed.
Of course, what happens on the day may be very different from the plan! Locos can even be shunted via the WCML if there's nothing in the way.
Unless my quail is wrong or there's been a remodelling in the last few years, the Down Furness Goods is accessible from both Goods Loops and the Down Main.Good point; from Goods Loop 1 a released loco can only access the Platforms or the WCML, you cannot get to the Goods Loop.
