I think if you buy a Z1-9 + Watford from a tube station (available from their equivalent to a TVM for £16.80), it is technically not an outboundary Travelcard and remains valid to go to Watford and then return into London.

A National Rail issued paper travelcard from Watford Jn will also include zones 7-9 but is not technically valid once you return to Watford, however if this is claimed you could just buy a single back to Watford High Street to go back to the zones, if not officially valid this is what we locally give people who have a Z1-9 at least!

That's fine *if you go to Watford Met*. Watford Junction is not in the Zones and so you cannot use a 1-9 Travelcard to go there.

Will be interesting to see if that changes when Watford Met closes.

I don't think either will let you return to London by train, but you could legitimately get a train out and then a TfL bus back until you're at a station within the zones such as Harrow and Wealdstone or Stanmore.

Watford High Street is in the zones and has bus stops on the 142 and 258 in both directions.

Zone 8 though if I'm remembering correctly.
