Firstly, I bought a travelcard from London Underground, including Watford Junction. This didn't work through the barriers at Watford, but I was let in and out without any problems.

The next day I bought a travelcard from the machines at Watford, for the same price, and on my return to Watford the barrier stole my ticket!

I had possibly been intending to use it again, but it was getting late and I couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

The TFL website doesn't mention only allowing one trip from Watford - it just says Zones 1-9 + Watford Junction, and I was let back in at Watford by the staff with the underground ticket.

Is the underground ticket different to the NR ticket, although they are both the same price? Or are the barriers at Watford programmed incorrectly?

It is possible you were sold a 1-6 travelcard with an extension return from Zone 6 to Watford Junction.. (so you would make a single journey to London, travel around on your 1-6, and make your return journey back, when you would have no longer need for your ticket).. Whereas the LU one is a full travelcard for Zones 1-9+W?

Not sure here, by the way, just speculating!

When I went there with a travelcard I was told by Watford staff the barriers didn't read the tickets rights. LU tickets can ahve difficulty being read by NR barriers and the other way around.

They should not keep the ticket, and you have every right to ask for it back. After all, you could require it for an onward bus connection.
