Watford Junction to Eastbourne

Just looking at the options for travel for a group of my partner's friends to travel to watch tennis in June all hold Senior railcards. Current plan is to travel at 0952 Southern service and change at Clapham Junction with an off peak return via Kensington Olympia @ £24.05 On the return depending on the time they may prefer to travel via Victoria & Euston presumably their tickets could be excessed to via London Terminals, would this need to be excessed before leaving Eastbourne or could it be done on the train?

Don't see why this shouldn't be possible, cost for a one-way change of route excess to route "Any Permitted" with LU transfer should be £2.05 I believe.

Question, would an excess purchased on the train work the barriers on the LU transfer?

Thanks for raising that, I guess it's best to purchase any permitted in the first place but travel out using Southern service.

The excess coupon should work barriers where a normal cross-London ticket would.

There is no penalty for obtaining the excess onboard, and indeed in this case they wouldn't even be 'off route' until after changing at Clapham Junction.

Some TOCs issue their staff with machines which are unable to excess to/from tickets with a Maltese Cross, as they use Printed Ticket Roll (PRT aka "bog roll") which obviously lacks the magnetic strip used to operate the Underground barriers. I'm not sure what kind of machines GTR's guards and OBSs are issued with but it may be better to obtain the excess at a ticket office (even if that's en-route) to avoid any issues.

Once obtained, the excess would be correctly encoded to work the barriers.

GTR and I think most of the South East Tocs issue ccst tickets onboard because of the high sales of Travelcards. The excess ticket should work the barriers if correctly issued.
Have you considered using a Southern only Group Daysave which I think is £11 per person. might need a short single to get you past 10.00 if it's a Weekday and if you came back via Victoria obviously you'd need another ticket from there to Watford. Daysave tickets need to be booked in advance.

Just to note there is currently an extremely limited Southern service to Watford and beyond. The service might have improved by June but you may have to go via Euston both ways anyway.

I can confirm from experience that overdistance excesses do work the Tube barriers.
