Watford Junction to Chichester / Havant 5 July

I was considering using a GWR Smart card to purchase an any permitted off peak day return to Havant as I would like to leave all travel options open and leave purchase until just before I travel in case I am run over by the proverbial tram.
I see that Watford Junction states that it doesn't have any smart card validators, could this be a problem? I'm having to travel from WFJ as the Met / Chiltern line is shut down that day so not near a station to arrange a TVM pick up before I travel.

Watford Junction has TVMs and a ticket office, so a ticket could be collected or purchased there. Whether the ticket you want is available to be loaded onto a smartcard I wouldn't know.
