I just looked on the section for the Watford Junction Rugby route on www.railsimroutes.net that the target simulator for this route will be openBVE v2.0 not openBVE v1.2.x.

Does this mean that the route will only be for OpenBVE v2.0 instead of v1.2.x or am I wrong? Does anyone know why?

Just asking.;)

PS: I'm really looking forward to this route soooooo badly, it looks fantastic so far!:)

I hope that openBVE 2 might be ready before Watford Junction to Rugby is finished, in which case there wouldn't likely be any great need to support openBVE 1 specifically (openBVE 2 will be backwards compatible with openBVE 1 content), however if the route is finished long before openBVE 2 is likely to be ready, then I could release it for openBVE 1 initially.

In the long term, WJ-R for openBVE 2 might include new features which openBVE 1 doesn't support though, and framerates in openBVE 1 will probably be lower too, so anyone wanting to use the route in v1, might need a faster computer than would otherwise be necessary when the route is used with openBVE 2. I'm just anticipating that openBVE 2 will be an even better platform for WJ-R, hence the route is being developed with openBVE 2 in mind, now.

I've briefly clarified this on the WJ-R page, and thanks for your interest in the route. :)

Oh Thanks Anthony that's a very kind thing you said there. Are you going to make another video of the progress of the route itself because it's been a year since you made the last one. If you are, I would really love to the see the Class 390 Pendolino in action on the route because I've been on the trains before and they are just brilliant to travel on. I've been on the West Coast Main Line a few times to Birmingham myself and it's just the best experience I've ever had in my life.

And one more thing, I do have a faster computer myself with an excellent graphics card.

Good luck with the rest of the development of the route Anthony.:D

Thanks. :)

A lot of my free time has been spent with programming and working on openBVE 2 itself, so I've not made much progress with WJ-R lately, and I don't feel that there's enough new work to show, to make another video worthwhile yet.

Later on in the year, I hope that I'll have some time to finish the remaining stations, missing scenery, and of course start the 3D version of the 390 cab, and finish the new exterior car objects that I started a little while ago. Then, there will definitely be something worth showing in a new video, and the route will be much closer to being fit for release, too. :)

Great! That's wonderful Anthony.

I don't have problems with the framerates myself on my computer because during this time now I've been driving some excellent New York Subway routes which are available from bvestation.com and they have no problem on OpenBVE whatsoever.

Anthony, just out of pure interest - what sort of fps does the Watford Jn route achieve in normal openBVE compared with NWM; for example. The detail of the routes really is astonishing.

I ran some tests to check framerates, and used the following settings for both routes (openBVE v1.2.7.3 and Windows 7 64-bit):

Viewing distance: 600m
Resolution: 1920x1200 fullscreen
Graphics card settings: 16xQ antialiasing / 16x anisotropic filtering
openBVE graphics settings: Smooth transparency enabled
Train used: 220 Voyager for openBVE from TSC

In both the cab and external view, framerates on Watford Junction to Rugby range from 45 to 150 fps (except tunnels where it's much higher), but a range of of 60 to 80 or 90 fps is fairly typical on the four track sections (framerates on the double track Weedon line are higher). Using the same train and settings on NWM (15.20 [220] Maybank-Ludgate Hill SuO STP 2007.csv), framerates range from 200 to 300 fps. The Voyager has fairly geometrically simple exterior car objects however; if something like the new 323 exterior car objects I'm working on are used, then framerates are rather lower. On WJ-R, typically 40 - 60 fps is seen in the cab instead, or 30 to 40 fps in the external view. On NWM with the new 323, in-cab framerates remain high at over 200 fps, but in the external view, typically 70-80 fps is seen. The class 86/87 and Mk2 coach exterior objects I've also been working on, are deliberately less complex than the 323's exterior car objects, so the framerate reduction when these are used is not as drastic as that seen with the 323 exterior objects.

To put the framerate differences between the two routes into perspective, WJ-R is around 22 km longer than the NWM route mentioned above, it has over 124000 static 3D objects placed compared to around 47500 in this particular NWM route, some of which are more geometrically complex than equivalent objects in NWM, and WJ-R has over 600000 faces in total, compared to around 146000 in the aforementioned NWM route.

The framerates sound fine, although my computer has a 3GHz Core 2 Quad CPU and a Geforce GTX 260 graphics card. This is a fairly fast computer, so slower machines aren't going to cope so well with all the bells and whistles, although if framerates in the region of 20 fps are acceptable, then some fun can still be had with the route as shown in my screenshots on slower computers (like my 2.2GHz Athlon64 X2 4200 and Radeon 2600 Pro machine for example). This is why, if I release the route for openBVE 1, I'll want to create a low detail variant, and I would also want to release low detail versions of any exterior car objects I create too, so people can have some flexibility depending upon their hardware and what is important to them when they drive a route.

The faster renderer of openBVE 2 means that there should be less of a need to worry about such things though.

The framerates on my Computer go up to from 30fps to 60fps which is not bad when I use the NWM route on OpenBVE1.

I have a Radeon HD 3200 Graphics card which is very very good to cope with the Watford Junction- Rugby route when I wait to see it get released.

Another thing I was going to say is that it's been a while since I looked on bve4.net about the next update for NWM that was posted back in March. Has there been any progress on that so far?

Very impressive frame rates then! I noted you referred to a widescreen resolution: - does this result in stretched cabs as I found when setting open bve to my native resolution the cabs were not in the correct aspects. As such I run in 1024x768 with black bars either side!
