Looking at going from Waterloo to Southampton Central. There doesn't appear to be any advance fares so £31.70 off peak.

However, Waterloo to Brockenhurst (further on from Southampton) attracts an advance fare of £9.00. Brockenhurst back to Southampton £5.50. Making the extra journey saves £17.20.

If I managed to obtain tickets for both legs of the journey before beginning to travel, is there any reason why I cannot get off at Southampton first time and not go to Brockenhurst at all?

SWT only do advances to/from stations south of Brockenhurst. Technically that still isn't allowed :)

Cheap fares from Waterloo to Southampton are obtainable from Megatrain.

The restrictions are very little different to an Advance, ie booked train only.

Just don't try getting off at Eastleigh...

PS, if you do book a normal 'Advance' through to/from Brockenhurst don't forget there are ticket barriers at Southampton...

On a slightly related note, I have booked couple of tickets on megatrain to Southampton (£1 each way)! Do I get an actual ticket sent to me or do I just bring the confirmation email with me to travel?

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Technically it isn't allowed. However, the railway has fulfilled it's contractual obligation to get you to Southampton when you first get there so the concensus after a discussion (I'll try and find the thread shortly) was that it would be difficult to justify issuing a penalty fare in those exact circumstances. One thing you might want to check is that the ticket from Brockenhurst to Southampton would be valid on whatever train you would get to arrive at Southampton just before the train from Waterloo gets in. This is because it is that ticket that you would need to operate the gates at Southampton.

The concensus is different in the reverse direction so you would need to make the extra journey for the return leg.

Edit: Previous post by DaveNewcastle is here and includes a link to the earlier thread with a full discussion.

No comment, see links provided by MikeWh. My views remain unchanged.

Unless you live near Waterloo I suspect your journey may be from elsewhere, so you may be already in possession of a ticket to Waterloo? If you can extend this to Clapham Junction for minimal cost then there is a ticket that may interest you....

Brighton - Southampton Ctl (Rte: Not London) is £20.50 (CDR), £22.40 (SVR) and £23.40 (SDR).

Note that, unless you have a season ticket, your train would have to call at Clapham Jn for a combination of a ticket to Clapham Jn and the above ticket to be valid.

Even a SWT guard recommends this ticket on the wnxx forum!

If travelling during the day and time is not a priority a Southern Daysave is avaiable at £10, using Southrn Trains only. There are through trains from Victoria via Horsham

There are also Southern advances available at £3.75 each way booked via the southern website, these are also available much earlier in the day from Victoria than a daysave ticket.
However be aware that the journey is much longer about 2 hr 30 mins. That said once you're past Gatwick the scenery on the Arun Valley Line is quite good. Theres also quite a lot of railway interest with the service splitting in to fast and slow portions and some semaphore signalling, look out for the traditional wheel operated level crossing at littlehaven and the oldest signal box at Billingshurst.
