Hello all,

I am writing a timetable for SimSig and basically wish to know what sort of stock would be used on what service? I did go there in 2005 on the diverted HSTs (were these every hour by the way?) and I remember seeing slammers but as they were normal and I was too busy taking numbers, I never really noted what services the slammers are on?

I know the local stuff is 8 car 455s (or 4 on the odd one) but were CEPs or VEPs known to work hounslow/kingston loops, shepperton, Windsor, Guildford etc? I know one in 05 or 06 I was living temporarily in Balham and had a job interview (taken place in a pub of all places!) for a temp job at the adventure park, and I got a 455 there but had a VEP on the way back, so I don't know how normal it was then?

I know 442s were on the Weymouths, and maybe the Warehams, but were there any slammers like CIGs etc on the Southampton, Portsmouth or Alton services? I think 450s and 444s were common at this time, but I'd imagine there wasn't many 450s to hand on the Houslow loop, Weybridge via Brentford and Windsor services, but I guess the latter may have been 455s and 458s?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,

James.

By this time 442s generally worked the xx05 Waterloo - Poole and xx35 Waterloo - Weymouth services; they ceased working on the Portsmouth line in around 2004. They occasionally appeared on xx39 Waterloo - Southampton services as well.

Most of the CEPs, CIGs and VEPs had gone by this time, and it's difficult to tell you exactly which services they were working in a given year as the numbers and diagrams were constantly changing.

A VEP on the Chessington line was probably quite a rarity, I think everything was booked for 455s.

The last SWT slammers disappeared in May 2005. For the last few months, they could be found anywhere which needed a unit. The Alton and Basingstoke services were the first services to turn over to Desiro operation in 2003. By the beginning of 2005, there were only about 30-40 SWT slammers left, and these operated a few Portsmouth via Eastleigh services (mainly Cig's and Cep's), and Vep's were used on one or two Guildford diagrams but that was it. They mainly found use in peak hours running services to Guildford, Haslemere, Portsmouth and Bournemouth if I recall correctly, as by 2005 they didn't have much booked off-peak work, and at the end of April and May they had no booked work whatsoever because there was a massive cull at the end of April on SWT slammers, and they worked whatever needed to be worked for their final month until withdrawal. Hope that helps. :)

There was a booked slammer working on the 1339 Waterloo to Southampton until early May 2005, the final slammer diagram was a Windsor (all day),this finished with the 2023 from Windsor. The last day was May 20th 2005 which resulted in an extra run on the 2153 Waterloo-Alton with 73235 attached for good measure.

170s were also used in 2005 to supplement the 159s on West Of England services.
