While waiting for a bus under the northernmost of the two railway bridges in Waterloo Road, Epsom (immediately east of the station), I was intrigued by the label attached to the brickwork.

Yes, in one direction the line does lead to London Waterloo, though not using the ‘Windsor lines’. The other direction leads to Leatherhead, Dorking, Guildford etc but would only be a very circuitous route to Wokingham using a reversal.

Can anyone explain why these two destinations are listed in this way?
This is bridge 13/11A
Waterloo Road (B290)

Between Waterloo (Windsor Lines) and Wokingham Jn

In the event of any road vehicles striking this bridge please phone

The Railway Authority on...

It certainly looks as though whoever specified the sign misunderstood where the bridge is located. Google Streetview shows that each of the three spans has its own sign - are the others wrong as well? The southernmost span is under the ex LBSCR line, so should be different.

Golly - I live in Epsom and walk under that bridge multiple times a week and I never even noticed the error!!!

Yes, it's been wrongly labelled - I'd suggest flagging it up to Network Rail.

I am not sure if it even accurate as far as the road is concerned. I think that the B290 only starts further south at the Ashley Road/Ashley Avenue junction.

I had a look a few days ago; there's errors on the other bridge there as well...

For a start, the bridge into platform 1 is labelled in a way which describes the line via Ewell West - which that track cannot access. I'll try to get a picture this week.
