Waterloo- Kingston with Freedom Pass

Hello,

I have just received a disabled persons Freedom Pass and I am trying to determine the cheapest way for me to get to work.

I need to travel from London Waterloo to Kingston. I often start work at 10am, so I usually catch the 9:12am train from Waterloo.

The Freedom Pass is valid on National Rail from 9:30am, so I was wondering whether it would be OK for me to buy a train ticket from Waterloo to Raynes Park (which arrives at 9:31am) but then stay on the train to Kingston as my Freedom Pass will be valid by the time the train departs from Raynes Park.

Obviously if I did this I would need to buy a paper ticket rather than using my Oyster Card as I wouldn't actually be touching out at Raynes Park, so I was also wondering whether this would actually be cheaper than just using my Oyster Card to go from Waterloo - Kingston? (from what I can tell, its usually cheaper to use an Oyster Card than buying a paper ticket, but I'm getting confused about how much the journey would cost using an Oyster Card).

Before I received my Freedom Pass I used to just buy an annual Zone 1-6 travel card, so I'm not used to having to think about how much journeys within these zones cost and I'm finding it a bit confusing, so any advice would be much appreciated!

Raynes Park is in zone 4.
Anytime single on paper from Waterloo is £4.80 (£3.15 with a Disabled Railcard).

Kingston is in zone 6.
Peak single from zone 1 on Oyster using National Rail only is £5.70 (with or without a railcard on your Oyster).

So the cheapest option is always a paper Anytime single ticket to Raynes Park.

As you asked for the cheapest way to get to work, this would of course be by using only modes covered by your Freedom Pass:

• Tube to Richmond, then 65 bus
• Tube to Wimbledon, then 57 bus
• Tube to Wimbledon, then 0943 train (arr. 0955)

Whether any of these will be viable for you will depend on what your actual journey is (unless you live very close to Waterloo) and potentially whether you are willing to spend a little longer travelling.

I am confused! Where does the Diisabled Railcard come in? The OP mentioned a Freedom Pass issued on disability grounds. The tips above are interesting though.

Freedom Pass is generally valid on National Rail services at 0930.

Quite right, I got my wires crossed with Freedom Pass/Senior/Disabled. A Senior Railcard is not valid until 10 for journeys within the Network Area. A Disabled Railcard is valid at any time. And the OP may or may not have either of these in any case

Not quite. The Senior Railcard discount isn’t available Monday to Friday for journeys made wholly within the London and South East area until the Off-Peak Day ticket for the journey becomes available. A dozen or so exceptions are on this page.
