Travelling around Travelling arould the Anglia area on a day ranger and just aware of all the waste laying around the network, from old rails, old sleepers, old empty bags of ballast old electrical boxes, it doesn't look good and the scrap value from all across the network must run into millions. Why isn't this stuff cleared away after work has been completed instead of left lying around?

Not all of it is scrap, some of it will be strategically located spares.

I presume that the “old…” means that at least the ‘stuff’ had served a good and honourable life but recently been replaced.

In East Anglia the Whitemoor site sorts a huge volume of material every year with much of it going for sale (rather than ‘landfill’).

Can someone explain if anything ever happens to the track that is removed when new track is laid It seems that on most routes there is a growing mountain of old track, some left at the trackside some between the rails. Does it ever get collected and recycled?
