Was this London to Reading train actually a 16 coach service?

RealTimeTrains is reporting that this train ran as a 16 coach service. Did it? And if so, what would the logistics be, in terms of stopping at stations with shorter platforms - could this even fit on the platform at Paddington or Reading?

No, it’s a mistake in the data feed such as a set swap where someone forgets to cancel the original set. Gets reported here quite often.

Only ran as a 12 car, 387158 appears to be double-allocated to both 1K20 https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:P75506/2023-08-24/detailed#allox_id=0 which it did work, and 1K18 https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:P75504/2023-08-24/detailed#allox_id=0 which in reality was really only a 4 car.

1K19 was running 8 coaches vice 4 due to earlier disruption, so it was ad-hoc arranged for that to split at Paddington, with 387154 working 1K18 alone, and 387158 staying behind to attach to short-formed 1K21 for 1K20. It’s that split and reattach that RTT doesn’t seem to have processed correctly. It was input into upstream industry systems around 1430 by yours truly, I don’t know what RTTs refresh rate is for these things; or what triggers a formation update - but that looks to be where the discrepancy lies.

RTT processes data within about 5 minutes of it being pushed to Gemini. It looks like that change that you mention @JN114 never got pushed to us...

The Passenger Information System at East Croydon, and the automated announcements were offering a 20 coach train on Monday. Of course it was 12. On being told station staff switched to manual announcements which mattered because the train split at Redhill. The automated version was offering 8 coaches to Reigate which never happens.

The first rule of trains “longer“ than 12 coaches is “it’s the data feed” unless it‘s a Caledonian Sleeper.

Common sense will tell you that anything over 12 coaches obviously isn’t going to run that way. Sleeper and charters obviously excluded.

In a similar vein, 1A17 08:55 Manchester to London today shows up as 390001 + 390148, which it isn't going to be. As is 1H02 06:10 London to Manchester which works it. I think 390001 is the set in error.

I’m guessing that 390148 was booked to be 1F11 06:36 London-Liverpool but was swapped onto 1H02, with 1F11 eventually running late with 390132.
