My card works in TVMs and in ticket offices.

Then might I suggest that you do three things: first off, buy your tickets in advance of boarding whenever it is possible to do so; secondly, carry a small amount of cash for the situations when it isn't possible; and thirdly, have a look at getting a basic bank account that allows you to have a real debit card.

It was a draw. And cards arent accepted inside the ground, so I made the decision to buy food and drink outside the ground. I can't choose another form of payment when I don't have it.

You are obviously aware that your card is not always accepted everywhere, so it would be wise not to board a train without a ticket, not for the sake of £2 odd.

I'm on a website called "stoozing dot com" I still hold a electron/visa card so I know all about them. (Used for Ryanair flights to save on card fees in the old days)

The debit card that is issued with a basic bank account is likely to also be online auth only if the bank doesn't seem you to be that creditworthy

Hence why I suggested it might involve some shopping around.

The original poster has received some useful advice, and may wish to correspond with the train company, the bank and perhaps other parties and/or consider a different payment method. Once we have further developments we can reopen the thread.

The following are accepted as methods of payments at National Rail stations and retail outlets. They also apply to paying on-train when no opportunity to purchase beforehand existed.....

Credit/Debit/Charge Cards

All National Rail train companies accept the major cards such as Visa, Visa Delta, MasterCard, Maestro and Amex. Some train companies also accept Diners Club International, Solo and Electron.

I believe the above statement could do with much further clarification, for the benefit of both railway staff and passengers alike.
