What routes is this valid on? On the return could I get an XC to Leamington Spa and a local from there?

Well the guard on the 165 said it's fine and I got through the manned barrier fine at New Street :P if there's any problem I'll just buy a new ticket.
I agree with AlterEgo; the furthest "out of the way" you can go on that ticket is Stratford U Avon (and then back via Shirley). If you used a service from you would be liable to buy new tickets costing £9.20.
The barrier guys letting you in/out at BHM doesn't really say anything as they can't tell what train you've gotten on/off.
