Usually I've found that advance tickets are not available for the whole of this journey, but only by splitting eg at Manchester or York. Is there any way of speeding up the tedious process of finding the best split? I would need to travel after 5.30 on Friday 18th Nov. returning on Sunday afternoon.

It would depend on the allocations and how the bookings are going. e.g. if loads of people book Advance tickets from Manchester-Leeds on the Liverpool-Scarborough train, you will be best off splitting at Manchester. On the other hand, if loads of people book between Huddersfield and York on the Manchester-Newcastle train, you are better off splitting at York. There is not likely to be any way to automate that, unless someone devised a split fare engine that looked at all the possible splits in 'real time' using a connection to the central reservation system.

One problem is that, as you have to change, it is usually quicker to change onto another train company at York - and so you don't get offered TransPennine advance fares.

If you use one of the webtis systems, like Southern Railways, then you can specify a route as 'TransPennine only'. (it's on the left, near the bottom, after you have searched for a journey).

It is (just about) possible to get the same results on TransPennine's website, but it's a complete nuisance - although you may be able to find something better by changing at Leeds.

It seems like you can't get them on Transpennine's website at the moment - they have broken the 'slower routes with cheaper tickets' section so that you can't get Advance tickets from it.
Does anyone have the energy to try and get them to fix it again?

I don't, because in general TOCs are not particularly interested in listening to their customers (though they claim they are, of course!). You have to go through Customer Services staff who, for the most part, seem to misunderstand complicated issues, and you can't get through to the people who are in a position to even understand a problem like this - let alone fix it!

I would just recommend people avoid using Thetrainline sites, and that includes TPE, although there are some tickets that Thetrainline will issue that WebTIS won't (e.g. the anomaly that is the cheapest way to get from York to Manchester), so it's always worth shopping around.

I've had at least two protracted email exchanges in the past, I think I posted them on here as I kept just getting nonsense answers.
Post worked better than email - it didn't fix the problem but at least somebody actually read it properly.

The problem is TP's 50% offer for students isn't available anywere else.
