Wareham Pedestrian Crossing - Procedure

Hi all,

Travelling about near Wareham the last few days has lead me to discover it has a (seemingly?) unique operation in terms of the pedestrian crossing near to the former signal box.

It appears that the crossing has minature signal lights operated by track detection as is often the case, but that there is also an attendant (in non-NR uniform - are they NR staff or contractors?) that closes electrically operated security fences on approach of a train, before the lights turn to red.

Does anyone know the exact procedure? What was the reason for its introduction? Is it interlocked with the signalling in any way, or is there some form or communication between the attendant and the signaller?

I'd be interested for any responses!!

Sounds like some form of failure or degraded working, as it seems unusually wasteful!

Crossing keeper is employed by Dorset County Council AFAIK

No. This is the normal working for this crossing, as a solution to the high rate of abuse previous to the installation of gates - and presence of keeper.
