Walton/Watford into London

I’m going to be staying the night in Walton-on-Thames with my parents on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and travelling into London together on each of those days. Whilst we’re in London we’ll also no doubt be using the Underground etc. within zones 1-2.

I have an Oyster card and a 16-25 Railcard (with the railcard discount also applied onto the Oyster card). What tickets are we best buying over the weekend? Day return tickets into London from Walton and separate day travelcards for use in central London? I was told by a friend it would be cheaper for me not to use my Oyster card and just ask for a combined return train ticket and day travelcard for each of the three of us. Does anyone know if this is right/possible from Walton-on-Thames?

On Monday I’ll be leaving my parents and staying the night in Watford before going back into London in the morning and catching a bus home from Victoria coach station. What am I best doing with all these journeys into/out of and around London? Would it be cheaper getting the slower Overground trains to Watford Junction? Better to buy paper tickets or just use my Oyster card? Thanks for your help.

SWT offer GroupSave where can get 3 travelcards from Walton to London Z1-6 for price of two. On Saturday and Sunday it will cost £25.80 each day for these tickets. Same Friday if you can arrive into London after 12pm or £32.55 after 10am. SWT TVMs sell these too.

On the Monday, Walton to Watford Junction Off-Peak Day Return is £10.95 Y-P. On the way back either break your journey at Euston and use the underground to Victoria, or at Clapham to use another Southern train to Victoria. Either of those routes you must touch in with your Oyster card.

On his return journey, I am of the opinion that watford-euston-victoria would be allowed on the ticket being proposed.

The OP said he would stay overnight in Watford, so a day return won't be much good.

If the OP decides to travel to Victoria using Oyster with the railcard discount added. Use the fast London Midland to Euston service then change for the Victoria line which is only £3.75 single after 0930, during the morning peak, it's £8.60.

With the GroupSave tickets, is it strictly only for travel all together? As may want to split up whilst in London.

On Monday I won't be going to Watford direct from Walton but more likely from Euston in the evening.

Also, on Tuesday I'm no longer going home from Victoria in the morning, going home from Euston in the evening instead. I don't think it's possible to get an open return to Watford from Euston? Thanks again for your help.

I would advise that your parents get Walton on Thames to London Zones 1-6 Day Travelcards. This will cost (each):
£13.00, if arriving at London Terminals from 12:00 and returning on trains leaving Waterloo before 16:00 or after 19:00
£16.40 if arriving at London Terminals from 10:00
£20.60 otherwise

What time will you yourself be travelling on Monday and Tuesday?
