Waltham Cross to Templecombe

Hi,
I will be making this journey a few times over the next few months. I am curious as to why I can get cheap advance tickets from Waterloo to Templecombe but not from Waltham Cross to Templecombe.
If I go to Castle Cary instead I can get cheap tickets that get me across London as well, but this service doesn't run as late on a Sunday evening.

The Waterloo to Templecombe flow has a band of walk-up tickets and a band of Advance tickets. Both bands are priced by South West Trains, being the operator you'd use for the journey.

On the other hand, Waltham Cross to Templecombe only has a band of walk up fares, being priced by National Express East Anglia.

This is the crux of the problem - the fact the fares are set by different companies. NXEA have decided that the flow doesn't warrant Advance fares and that you'd be better placed getting the Advance from Waterloo, and a ticket to get you to Waterloo.

Your best option would indeed get a ticket to Liverpool Street, pay the Tube fare to get to Waterloo (using Oyster here would save you even more money especially as you are doing the journey regularly), and have the Advance from there.

SWT offer Advance tickets to all origins/destinations within Zones 1-6. Your cheapest option would be to buy and Advance from Enfield Lock to Templecombe from £11 single and a Day Single Waltham Cross to Enfield Lock for £1.90

I hope you have a good trip to Templecombe - just think of all the money you could save by not buying a ticket on the day!

Another suggestion is to purchase an advance ticket from Waterloo, as previously advised, and a Zones 1-6 Travelcard.

Although Waltham Cross Rail Station is outside of Zone 6, the bus station is not!

A short walk to the bus station, and there is a 15 minute service on route 491 (towards North Middlesex Hospital). It stops at the station end of Newbury Avenue, (next to Enfield Lock Station).

From Enfield Lock you can use your travelcard to travel on the train into Liverpool Street .

Or you can pay £1.90 extra for the single to Enfield Lock aswell
