Can I travel via Manchester on this ticket? Actually live north of Manc so going via Birkenhead and Chester as suggested is a very long, slow way round. Could I travel into Liverpool then on any train to Manc? Doesn't seem to be stating this on searches I'm doing but webtis is down at the moment so only done on the trainline. Thanks.

Wallasey - Chester - Altrincham is the shortest route by rail and after having a look, Wallasey - Manchester - Altrincham is some 7 miles longer (due to all MAN - ALT trains passing through Stockport).
However, buying WLV - LIV and then LIV - ALT does permit travel via Manchester, as LIV - MAN - ALT is now within 3 miles of the shortest route. It's £2 more expensive to do this though and you're only saving 10 minutes at best compared to travel via Chester.

Why do you want a ticket to Altrincham - it's cheaper to buy one to Manchester

For Wallasey to Altrincham the cheapest ticket combination is a Merseyrail Off-Peak Day Saver plus a Chester to Altrincham ticket which undercuts the Wallasey to Altrincham fare. Also if there are two of you travelling together you can buy a Duo ticket for Chester to Altrincham and save further.

The cheapest combination for one person would be to split at Garswood and Bryn for a total of £10.90 but not trains call there and it's a bit long-winded.
Could this perhaps be a case of wanting to use the return portion of an SVR/SOR to reach a destination slightly off the beaten track of said ticket?
Thanks for all the replies - I was given the ticket by a friend who no longer needed the return portion. I've worked out that I'll go to Altrincham on the mid-Cheshire route (i.e. via Chester) and buy a Metrolink weekend saver which I'll use all weekend + will get me back to Manchester from Altrincham! I have bought a cheap advance to Wallasey using East Midlands trains + connections (also allows for connections from TfGM stations) which is a good find and a bargain I did not know about - saw it on BR Fares.
