Walking between warrington stations

Hi all,

Can anyone please tell me how long it takes to walk between these two stations. I am travelling down from glasgow to warrington bank quay en-route to liverpool and get into bank quay 2 mins before the liverpool train departs, most likely missing it. I was wondering if it would be quicker to walk up to central and get a liverpool train from there or if it would take roughly the same time to walk to central and get on the next train as it would to wait at bank quay for the next train. Sorry if this sounds a little confusing.

I would allow at least 10 minutes of brisk walking but I know where I am going. Probably longer if you haven't done it before. I can't remember if it is well signposted.

Google Maps says 15 minutes walk for the 0.8 miles.

well, its signposted pretty poorly actually. As an alternate route to get to liverpool from Bank Quay, you can catch the Arriva Trains Wales' Manchester service as far as Newton, and catch a train from there, or you can cross over into the interchange and catch the Centrelink service (route 101) at the cost of about 50p tops (i think it might be 20p but i dont know exactly) into Central, or theres buses if you turn left and cross over

What day are you travilling on as personally if i'm going from Glasgow to Liverpool i'd change at Wigan North Western were theres 3tph to Liverpool[the express to Liv from WNW goes around 25 past the hour], & you'd save at least an hour.

Wasn't having a go at you, i was suggesting a quicker route & more trains to Liverpool by changing at Wigan which is what i'd do rather than change at Warrington.
If the op changed at Wigan it's likely he might get to Liverpool 15 min or more before the direct train from Warrington which the op may well miss does.

Lol i've confused myself, what i should have said is, if the op changes at Wigan he might arrive in Liverpool before that train from Warrington[which he will miss] does.

ah, right, im with you, was having one of my denser moments, forgetting about the Liverpool-Wigan trains, in spite of the fact that i actually commute on one! XD

It's a 10 minute brisk walk if you know where you are going - I'd say 15 (or possible more) minutes is more realistic if you don't know the route.

Here's the route I tend to do, it may be quicker other routes, but this is probably the simplest:

It isn't really signposted, which isn't good at all. But from Bank Quay you can follow street signs for the town centre, head into the "Golden Square" shopping centre (if it's open) and once you are in there follow signs for the "Transport Interchange". Once you reach the bus station, Warrington Central station is visible through the glass (but the signage is still pretty poor).

If it's Monday - Friday daytime there's a bus between the two every 20 minutes - It costs just 20p. Link to map & timetable.

Although having said that, it would probably be easier to get off at Wigan North Western and get a twice hourly Northern service to Liverpool Lime Street!

It's a shame there isn't a station where the North/South & East/West routes cross, say, on Froghall Lane. It'd make Warrington a much more convenient interchange point.

I do Edinburgh to Liverpool quite regularly - very often the Virgin service overtakes the Blackpool to Liverpool Lime St stopper - normally somewhere around Euxton Balshaw Lane where it is often held back by a signal (the line from Euxton to WBQ is 2-track (and the Bham VT is often prioritised in front the Northern Rail stopper) even at the expense of delaying the local.

So don't rule out the prospect of arriving early at Warrington BQ and being able to take advantage of a slightly late running NR service.

Deciding whether to change at Wigan NW or Warrington BQ is significantly aided if you can check the live departure boards of both potential trains as you approach Wigan. However if the OP has an Advance ticket to Warrington then getting off at Wigan is not permitted, although there is a very low chance of getting caught as you wouldn't be going through a barrier.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I havent been on sooner to answer, the reason for me changing at warrington is that I've booked via megatrain in order to save a bit of cash hence the need to change at warrington as this offered the best value for money.

As a slight aside, there used to be some inter-station links with maps listed in the all-line timetable, at least a few years ago.

The ones shown in the '98 timetable show maps for

Bradford (Interchange - Forster Sq),
Liverpool (Lime St, Central, Moorfields & James St),
Birmingham (New St, Moor St & Snow Hill),
Warrington (Bank Quay - Central),
Wigan (North Western - Wallgate),
Glasgow (Queen St - Central),
Newark (Northgate - Castle),
Manchester (Piccadilly - Victoria)
Wakefield (Westgate - Kirkgate).

These always seemed like a good idea to me and I did make use of them on occasion. I see there is a note saying these were reproduced courtesy of OAG Rail Guide. Wonder why they are no longer included in the all-line timetable, maybe no longer in the guide?

Agreed, it'd make a lot of interchanges easier

One thing not mentioned in the other replies is that Warrington Central has four trains an hour for Liverpool (two NR Pacers, one EMT 158 and one TPE 185), so you shouldn't have to wait long (or, at least your wait at Central should be shorter than your walk *to* Central)

Again, thanks very much for all your help,this has been a real benefit to me. I was attempting to plan a route using google maps, but no doubt i would end up getting lost. The fact there are 4 trains an hour means that i dont have to rush to get to Central station. Great

Also when im buying my ticket from Warrington to Liverpool is it valid to all Liverpool stations as I need to get to James Street to get to my accomodation or only as far as Lime Street?

It should be valid, though whether the barriers in the Merseyrail stations actually recogonize that, I wouldn't know.

Their Wigan one is wrong, theres no Wigan NW station exit/entrance on Queen Street side as the stations on a viaduct.

The main entrance is where the track passes over Wallgate and theirs a secondary entrance which leads out to King St via a pedestiran bridge.
