I tend to use Street view as some of the canal/rivers have been photographed to give an idea of what's it like on the ground.
Especially when it comes to riverside paths where some landowners decide the right of way doesn't apply and fences off their property. You could expect it for a minor footpath alongside a river but not for a named route such as the Severn Way (or even the Thames Path)
