Just out of curiosity: I was travelling from London KX to Wakefield on VTEC this week. I realised while on board that I needed to extend my journey to Huddersfield but had no ticket for the stretch Wakefield to Huddersfield. I sought out the guard on the VTEC service and he said he was busy but would come through the train and sell me a Wakefield to Huddersfield ticket. He didn't come through and then the train missed the connection at Wakefield (which I find it does very regularly. It's the 1833 KGX-BDQ).

So Huddersfield passengers were advised to stay on until Leeds. Where we missed the connection again. So in the time I had to wait, I went to the ticket window on Platform 1 at Leeds and asked for a Wakefield to Huddersfield NOT via Leeds single as I was only travelling via Leeds because of the missed connection at Wakefield. The ticket seller refused and said I would need to pay for a via Leeds ticket as I was travelling via Leeds. I reluctantly bought it. In the event, there was no ticket check on the TPE to Huddersfield, or at Huddersfield station.

So was the ticket seller at Leeds correct, or should I have been sold a not via Leeds ticket at Leeds?

I can see reason to argue both ways on this. From what you say there, I think I would have to side with the ticket seller on this occasion, but there are a few variables which could sway things either way.

I personally think that the ticket seller was 'officially' correct, as unfortunately you weren't able to purchase a ticket beforehand. You were just very unlucky on this occasion as the conductor on the train was too busy to sell you a ticket.

But I would like to think that staff can use some discretion in situations like this and offer you the cheaper ticket due to circumstances outside your control.

However, I can see how reasonable people can disagree on situations like this.
