You are as bad as my Yorkshire friends who think that because I live in St Albans, I live in London. And on one occasion I was asked if I could "pop to Bristol" to pick something up that someone had bought on Ebay. The person was serious and did not realise how big "The South" is...

Worked in Waitrose for two years up until last year... The worst part about this offer? The amount of coffee cups left on shelves, behind products, in empty baskets and on the floor by our customers!

I thought St Albans was north too.

Bristol is a funny one geographically (and non-geographically, come to think of it) speaking. If England had regional tiers of government, the S.W. region would almost certainly be based in Bristol, a journey of well over three hours in a fast car from my home in Cornwall, and over four hours by train. I attended Bristol University as a mature student from my home in London, journeytime two hours or a bit over.

By the way, I don't have multiple homes - London was at a different time of my life.

Worse than that, I have lived in Portsmouth and Fareham. It's surprising how many people thought that they were almost walking distance apart, and Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth (when it was in Hampshire) were all on the same local bus route!

I agree, it must have been very frustrating given that they like to keep the public areas clean there. I live just 2mins. 30secs. away so I always take mine home.

Actually, I thought that I may have boobed. I thought (afterwards) that t'speak was from the other side of the mountains, that would be a cardinal sin to some!

St Albans is very definitely in the north.

Worse than that, I have lived in Portsmouth and Fareham. It's surprising how many people thought that they were almost walking distance apart, and Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth (when it was in Hampshire) were all on the same local bus route!

It would have been the old Southdown bus route, jointly run with Coastline, Provincial and Hants & Dorset iirc. There was one, but I can't remember the number atm.

Part of that is down to exactly how big the South West of England actually is. The South West/West Midlands border just north of Tewkesbury is as far by road from Lands End as it is from the England/Scotland border by Gretna Green.

You jest, but in 1455, we generously hosted the first and second battles in the War of the Roses. I think that both York and Lancaster only had London's cast-off knackered horses so they hadn't yet got any further. You could say that St Albans was a surrogate northern battlefield.

They did manage to get their horses as far as Leicester for heat three!

I just wish Waitrose would do away with this stupid idea, or put their machines somewhere sensible of course, in my local store you get a queue of freeloaders blocking the queues to the tills causing ridiculous gridlock, think of Finsbury Park and you're almost there

I agree, but contrary to innformation I had received late last year, it seems that Waitrose are to keep the deal for the time being. A manager in our local store says that with a negligible cost to them, the drinks have been see to bring in customers which they see as worthwhile.

Just had an email that says from February 9th in order to claim a free hot drink in cafes you will need to purchase something else from the cafe to go with it; such as a sandwich, piece of fruit, or cake. This doesn't apply to the in store machines but there is a new "etiquette" guide.

CLASSY supermarket Waitrose has completely lost it after everyone took the **** with its free hot drinks.

The company had previously issued a masterfully passive-aggressive statement reminding loyalty card holders to buy a lovely cake if they wanted to linger with their complimentary coffee, which everyone ignored.
