WAFV test

Hello,

Just looking for some help if possible. I am due to retake the assessment centre in a few weeks time having last attended late 2021. I fell short on my last attempt on the WAFV test. Does anyone have any tips/hints?

Also can anyone please clarify if the square simply goes from grey to black or does it have different shades of grey? This was never clarified and I live in wonder if it was my eyes playing tricks on me!

The box is a standard grey and occasionally changes to one shade of black, that’s when you press the button. There are no tricks, it’s only ever one shade of black or grey. Many people end up not being able to differentiate between the two though, hence on your previous attempt you may have failed after thinking you were seeing things.

i did mine a month or two ago, definitely quite clearly goes black.

For that test I just told myself that if I can’t concentrate like a madman for 30 mins of my life to get a dream job, then I don’t deserve the job.

I stared at that screen so hard I think I gave it a complex

I may be a weirdo but I kinda enjoyed they challenge of it and it only felt like 10 mins had gone by when it finished.

On the odd occasion I felt like I could be distracted I just reminded myself what was at stake.

I think it’s also worth remembering why the test is there, currently I drive trams and I’d say it more stimulating than trains because we drive on roads and through the city, but there is still plenty of times we are just going down the same bit of predicable track again and again, and that’s when the need for concentration comes in, being ready and alert for the unpredictable. And train drivers definitely have to be able to concentrate more so than myself in the tram.

So it’s good to consider why the test is there and what it means about your future as a train driver.

Sorry to nitpick but is the square grey then just flashes to black only or does it go light grey to dark grey then black as the replies so far are a bit mixed

Gareth90 - grey to different shade of grey
Alpal - one shade of grey to black
Slee - just goes to black.

Again sorry to ask if this is obvious. Think I'm just panicking a bit as it's the only test I messed up last time so pressures on!

1. Don’t rely on hearing others click their buttons

2. Move your head backwards and forwards to/from the computer screen so that your eyes are constantly re-focusing and don’t ‘fixate’ allowing your brain to play tricks on you.

3. As soon as you click….do a forced blink of your eyes to refresh them.

Hi Gareth, which TOC have you applied for? Nothing on my info pack to say it's grey to grey and that's with Northern.

Focus, but don't stare intently as that's when your eyes/brain start perceiving the change of colour. I found looking near the corners and changing which corner rather than staring intently in the centre worked well. Only sat it once, so can't compare results but I passed enhanced standard

This test probably gets over thought the most and really probably one of the easiest to pass!
Ok I accept it’s a long 30 minutes but just rest your chin on your hand, watch the screen and the square definitely goes to a definite dark black and not a different shade of grey. This is the whole idea of the test, people not believing their eyes.

Thanks for the reply. I've passed the other tests but obviously didn't go through to the mmi last time. Think I've been overthinking the WAFV but hopefully will get through this time. Got to remember grey to black nothing else!!

If you struggle to remember the difference between grey and black I don’t want to be on your train as you are heading towards signals at 125mph

I’m sure you will be fine, it’s well easy. It’s a concentration test not a colour blindness test.

It only ever turns black, anything other is your eyes playing tricks. It’s very obvious when it changes. In the practice, hit it when it’s not black so you can clearly see the difference. Sometimes it feels like it’s flashing, or a different shade of grey etc but only hit the button when it turns black.

My strategy was to count in between to keep focus - so it turned black, I hit the button, start counting from 1. When it turns black, hit the button, start counting from 1 again. It helped the 30 mins go by quickly and helped me keep focus as it breaks the task down to small chunks of concentration, rather than one prolonged period.

Remember to blink often to refocus your eyes too.
