Just passed the guard on the 1400 Edinburgh-Kings Cross 'writing up' someone in the vestibule. Had a nosy as I was passing and it looked like the form was headed 'Penalty Fare Notice'. Has VTEC started running a PF scheme or do they use the same form for unpaid fare notices? I only heard a little of the conversation but I heard him telling the guy to keep the green carbon copy as he would need it to continue his journey, and something about calling within 21 days.

It will be an unpaid fares notice. Its basically an opportunity to pay the fare within 21 days otherwise a court summons will be issued. An unpaid fares notice will be for the standard or first class full single fare to the individuals destination station on the issuing TOC's network, and no discount or return portion will be issued.
Thanks. I'm familar with a UFN, the question was is anybody knew if VTEC were using the PFN form for UFN's or if there was a change of policy. The form definitely said it was a Penalty Fare Notice -at the top in large bold typeface - does it say UFN anywhere else? Are VTEC being sneaky and calling them PFs when they aren't?

I doubt they are allowed to issue a UPFN on a PF form. It would have to be done on the correct form. If so I wonder if it could lead to problems for the TOC if they needed to take it further - if they didn't receive payment - at a later date.
