VTEC interiors

I have always wanted to travel first class on VTEC, so I've paid quite a bit to do a 1st class journey with them that takes about three hours. However, I know it will be an HST as it is the Highland Chieftain, and I'm extremely worried that it will be the ex EMT HST.

Though VTEC have refurbished the 1st class seats, the seats are still horribly short and stubby, with only a tiny bit of leather, as opposed to the lovely proper VTEC seats, high back leather ones.

Does anyone know if the Ex EMT hst works the Inverness train? I hope not!

It's worked to Inverness (and Aberdeen) before, which I endured - it's been refurbished to VTEC colours also. But as Yorkie has said, it's normally serviced at Neville Hill Depot in Leeds as that depot caters for EMT HSTs on a daily basis, so having the ex-EMT set there on most nights is the most logical option for VTEC.

So on that basis, it's very unlikely that this set will end up on the Chieftain for this reason.

There are two sets with the original seats with VTEC. Set NL65 is an 8-car set and has a fixed diagram that takes it back to Neville Hill every night, though occasionally it does wander off diagram. The other set is EC64 which is a 9-car set and can work any VTEC HST diagram, including the Chieftain. Luck of the draw if you get it.

No it didn't. Seats retained, but with new seat covers, carpets etc.

It lost the bizarre section of Grammer seats in the TGS in favour of more IC70s.

Yes, really.

NL65 is the same as EC64, with the VTEC seats covers etc. It remains powered by EMT power cars, though.

As '43096' says: only EC64 and NL65 have managed to avoid 'Mallard' seats.

NL65 has never made it to Inverness in the time VTEC have used it - it's reached Stirling a couple of times on 1E03 or 1S22 (Stirling starter/finisher) but usually only when the set has needed to end at Craigentinny overnight as a one-off (99% of the time it starts/finishes at Neville Hill).

EC64 is as likely as any other normal set to work the Chieftan - so realistically a 1/14 chance.

That's a bit harsh, the IC70s have been recovered and re-padded with the same leather/fabric as on the Mallard sets. But yes, they are still IC70s. Had one on the Tyne Valley divert last year, I like IC70s, especially the first class ones, it was very comfy. YMMV.

But as they'll be gone next year, I don't blame Virgin on this one. They could have left it.

None of them have EMT livery.

Find me a single set that applies to. There are only 2 ex EMT sets on the ECML. Both are in VTEC livery and have VTEC interiors.

It's not one of the 2 ex EMT ones though. VTEC have set NL07 on spot hire today covering for ex EMT set NL65.

Correct. Maintenance cover for NL65 is inter-worked with the EMT fleet, so when NL65 is due a week-long exam (roughly every 10-12 weeks) the cover comes from an EMT set.
