9 hours to reach the company? Tweets get to the recipient in minutes if not seconds and are often a quick way of getting a response from the TOC. Plus in this digital age, it doesn't require any verbal contact which many are incapable or unwilling to do!

Did they respond that quickly here? I haven't seen the tweet so can't see if they replied.

On a point of order - tweets get to the recipient's inbox in minutes if not seconds. There's no way to be sure that it will actually be read in a hurry.

Initial Tweet made at 10:09pm on 30th July.

Virgin enquired 'what train' at 11:01pm same day.

Info provided at 5:35am next day.

No response seen, may have been made in private.

This link may take you to the exchange ... not sure if you have to be signed in to Twitter to see it:

It's the same link as in the opening post.

So Virgin responded in an hour but it took 6 and a half (or 18 and a half hours) for the complainer to provide the required info so they couldn't have been that bothered!

Ah, it was 5:35am, so six and a half ... I will edit my post to add the missing 'am' :)

Looking on VT's Facebook group, someone has posted a photograph which they claim to be showing a Pendolino overhanging a platform at Stockport. It appears to be 1A32 12:15 Manchester Picc to London Euston. 9-car Pendolino 390040.

That would indeed be platform 0 at Stockport which is, obviously, nowhere near long enough to to accompany a 390. Without knowing the train description system between the Stockport area boxes one has to wonder if the signaller at Stockport No2 thought he was dealing with the Cleethorpes train immediately behind.

A quick search on twitter reveals a less that happy passanger who ended up at Macclesfield as they could not get off at Stockport. They indicate no one was allowed to get off due to the error though not confirmed.

Of course if the guard had complete control of the doors they could open a local door and let everyone off that way.

Just saying!;)

Drivers release doors on Virgin, both 390s and 221s.

Guard on 221 units give 1-2 on the buzzer to close door which the driver operates from their cab.

Guards on 390 units have the actual close button on their local door panel.

Righto, I knew they closed on 390s, didn't realise the driver still opened. So what happens of the driver hits open while they are keyed in?

There's a brilliantly intricate system of routing 'is line clear' bell signals between the Stockport boxes - I'd certainly sympathise with them if they did get slightly confused!

Not sure why the guard would be keyed in before the doors open given there is nothing they can do other than close the doors, they can't even open a single door for local operation (other than the T-Key operated crew doors). Presumably the drivers don't key in in the same way as they do on units where the doors are fully operated by the guard (and only one location can be keyed in at a time)? On voyagers, as has been said the drivers open and close the doors (under the guards instruction) but the guard still keys in - keying in keeps their door open whilst the other doors are closed by the driver.

I know that, I'm just curious what would happen. Would all the doors open, all but the guard's, none?

If the driver presses the door open button then all the doors on that side open. Unless any are locked out of use of course. The guard only keys in to keep the local door open once the door close sequence has started. This is how it works on Voyagers.

None of the doors would open, the doors on one side would be released so the door open buttons would also illuminate but no doors would open!

I suspect there's only one way to find out <D

For what it's worth, on a particular sister fleet to the 390s that was built at the same time in the same factory, if you key in at two points simultaneously it trips the door control MCB, closing and locking all doors including the cab doors, even if you're trying to climb through them at the time. Not that I've ever done that myself mind

Electrostars have a rather sensible system where you can key on in two places at once without breaking anything (in theory, at least so long as you're not splitting or attaching), but the interlock light will flash, the panels go into a more restrictive mode, and the driver gets a big fat alert on Mitrac which results in "guard contact driver".

I take it the stock being discussed does not also have an "all release" button like that on some Bombardier units that actually opens all the doors. (Yes, I know the wording is wrong, and perhaps some other stock from other manufacturers has such a thing but it's labelled more adequately...)
