VT Shop - card payment once more?

Hi all,

I was travelling on the 0817 Preston-Crewe (for New St) train on Friday, on the BOMBARDIER Voyager set, and an announcement from the CSA in the Shop onboard came over with the usual 'Tea, Coffee....' drivel, then said (along these lines) ' As part of a trial today we will be accepting Mastercard debit and Visa credit card payment in a new chip and pin system onboard. Please note this is a trial run only, and not available on a ny other Virgin services.'

Perhaps they have secured some sort of trial equipment? Good news anyway, I do prefer cash myself though, especially for small transactions..

Sounds like a normal trial run, especially on a relatively early train. Is the train relatively empty? If so it could prove good for testing rather than a busy Birmingham-Euston for example.

Like WestCoast I prefer cash for small amounts and perhaps more importantly I prefer everyone else to use cash as it is often faster.

This is good news. I do cash for below £5 mark but prefer card above this. Considering it is very easy to spend more than £5 aboard I welcome this.

This is really good news, but to be honest, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

The market for the provision of merchant services is an incredibly competitive one, I would normally have expected the various providers to be hounding Stagecoach/Virgin with tempting offers.

In the meantime, are on-train revenue staff selling catering vouchers using a code on the handheld ticketing machines?

Yay well done them.. though it must be added that doing the card malarky is fraught with problems as most of the time its not a direct link to your bank as i found out on EC once where i got charged for 58 cans of beer and 16 sarnies. And thats with a combination of C&P and signing too
