Voyagers

Hi all,

Just a quick question which may seem a bit daft, does anyone one know the coach orders for these and Super Voyagers, more specifically the XC versions, I know Virgin go A, B, C, D, E but I'm not sure if the XCs are A, B, C, D, F?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

I think they used to run some of them as six-car units when they were first introduced, then cut them down to five-car. For some reason, they never changed the lettering.

Thanks, is coach F standard or first class?

Voyagers= A C D F
Super Voyagers = A B C D F
These letters then change when running in multiple and I think they go up to M
If memory serves correct A is the first class coach (and B on VT Super Voyagers can be if the need arises but also acts as standard on some services)
Coach F is the standard "Quiet" coach

Virgin's go,

A, B, C, D (Shop), E First Class. Not sure which coach is missed out on the 4 coach versions and how they continue when 2 are joined together.

This is correct for XC Voyagers/SuperVoyagers, and the way that they were with Virgin XC too.

Virgin now have A B C D E, or A C D E. A is Quiet Coach, E is First Class. D is composite Standard/First. It is a First class coach when needed ie North Wales runs in peaks and on Lancaster services. It is standard the rest of the time, ie North Wales runs off-peak and Brum - Scotland. It also has the shop in, and as such, if you had the Virgin set lettered like the XC sets, the order would be A D (B) C F. This is because the shop coach D was removed and reinserted further down the set.

The reason they originally missed out E, and is still the case with XC, they were lettered with a gap for an extra car that may have been ordered, to avoid relettering and reconfiguring the computer systems for bookings. As it happens, it was never ordered.

Yes it could!

You'd hope that then the Panto car could be configured to go anywhere in the set. If it had to go in that slot, for the Bus down the centre etc, then it'd screw Virgins composite coach over royally! It'd have to go in between the two First class coaches.

Burton on Trent fitters would be pretty annoyed I'd imagine at having to undo their work from a few years earlier!

None of the Voyagers or Super Voyagers were ever six-car units - the eccentric coach lettering was a plan for the future, rather than a legacy of the past.

Only the Meridan units on the MML have been reformed and changed length.

But they don't always work
I saw two Virgin 221s in multiple recently, the first one had the lettering right, except that A was at the end it was connected to the other one.
The other one had coach D and F, and 3 blanks.
This rather confused some of the people getting on it
