Was my first time on a voyager and would have been my last if virgin got there way!

Travelling to Carlisle from Manchester Piccadilly and travelling there and back the doors between the carriages nearly sliced me in half! Just wondering are the doors on a timer to close or have they got sensors (which don’t work)

They're on a timer AFAIK, but if they touch you they should re-open automatically anyway.

The one I was on closed then stayed closed on you! Which I had to force open myself! Has to be sad though when watching other people getting of is pretty funny

Not a Voyager but i had the same problem on 444 024. On boarding had to open the doors manually the switch didnt work but that was fine they glided open with but little effort. On leaving my seat and walking down the carriage (with regrets) to the opposite doors had to pull these ones open too, the switch wasnt working on that one either but these doors needed a bit more force.

Now because i had a fairly large shoulder bag at the time i put the bag through the doors first and casually walked sideways, course the doors then shut on me tightish. Promptly i opened the doors again and didnt dare look back for fear of embarrisment

They're all on a timer, and they stay closed when they touch you. It can be quite painful when it happens as well (but not after, luckily), as I learned the hard way back in November '05.

Memorex, you're thinking of meridians, where yes, the doors do reopen upon hitting you. (and dont hurt!

Have you seen the doors on a 185? you press the first one then they all open in front of you magically at same time you get there no fear of getting crushed

Doors may have been isolated? Check the green emergency open buttons above the door on either side. If one is poking out, just push it back in and the door will work again. Most of the time the doors are isolated by passengers - if a door is genuinely isolated by traincrew it will be isolated in the "open" position. Also seen some peak passengers have the right idea - some kids were trying to wrench open the internal doors, but, because it was switched on, it didn't like it. A passenger reached over the kids head and isolated it, allowing it to glide open...

IMHO the internal doors on the Voyagers are the biggest problem with them that is totally down to Bombardier and the overall design (Virgin are to blaim for most of the problems). They are slow to open and close, they are noisy when operating, the timer means that they are opening and closing constantly when people are getting on and off at stations, they have no sensors to stop them closing when people are passing through, and they close very hard and have quite a delay before re-opening if something is trapped. It would be nice if they were a bit quicker to open, they really need quieter mechanisms (internal doors on Turbostars and Electrostars are almost silent) which would also make the constant opening and closing less annyoing, but most of all they need sensors to prevent them closing on people. Most other automatic doors do have them, e.g they are controlled by a pressure pad or infra red so won't close on people anyway (Mk2/3 doors, automatic doors on shops etc), or they have a beam that will stop the doors closing if it's broken (e.g lift doors). In many cases warnings will be provided that the doors are closing aswell. Voyagers have none of the above. It wouldn't be so bad if the doors were less agressive when closing, and if the sensors detecting trapped things were quicker to act and more sensitive.
