Voyager Discovery

Does anyone else remember when Virgin CrossCountry introduced the beautiful Voyagers several years back, they launched a special cut-price 'Voyager Discovery' ticket? It was only available between Birmingham and Reading, and I recall it was of great value to travel on this teriffic new silver train.

I remember the opinion of passengers boarding who were speechless at the sheer beauty and speed of this fantastic new train. "Far more comfortable and spacious than those awful older trains" said one. Just a shame that several years on, the Voyagers are universally loathed nationwide, including my nan.

I like Voyagers!
Although any journey spent with your head shoved into somebody's armpit is not going to be a good one - although I might make an exception for Nicole Kidman - but I guess she would be in 1st.
I would quote happily swap any of Northern, TransPennine or London Midland trains for Voyagers; and the interiors are a little nicer than pendolini.

I'd do the swap, but in favour of all the other trains.

Even trains that have 2/3 door layouts and are plasticy like 185s and 350s, beat Voyagers! The only way the Voyager beats them is having power sockets by every window (and pillar!) seat. But then 185s have so many tables anyway so they're not a problem.

A refurbished 158/159 like on SWT put a Vomit to shame.

I'm not a fan of the 220/221 voyagers. I've never been on a 222, but I hear they are slightly better...

I just hate all the express DMUs really...Having a rumbling engin below your feet for hours and hours starts to take its toll. the 390s are fine as they are quiet...

One thing I do like about the voyagers tho are the large toilets and door areas...the unrefurbished MK2/3s where awful and small in that area...

Then BNS to Bournemouth

We were stuck in the luggage compartment most of the way

Voyagers are great. The only problem I have is when they arrive at stations, the brakes make a horrible screeching noise. I might be confusing the brakes with the rail enthusiasts complaining about them though...

On a recent trip on GC I was really surprised at how noisy their HSTs are! In days gone by HSTs seemed the ultimate in luxury especially after arriving from the coast in a 4 cig. These days I much prefer a 377 over a HST
