I'm on a Pendolino just left Preston.it was delayed there as the PA system had to be rebooted, involving a total shutdown. Probably just coincidence

I was on that exacr train, assuming it was the 17:17 from plaform 4 ;) was odd how it tilted from side to side (a little bit) sitting still.

QUOTE=carriageline;1783634]Question to drivers: these modern trains, when you get a fault does the computer make it any easier to diagnose what the problem is? (Ie you get a message straight away with what the problem is), and if so does that that make it easier to fix a problem than the "old stock"? Can you do more to rectify the fault with the computer, or is it still cases of tripping MCBs etc?

In short, if a train with a computer has, for example, door interlock problems, does the computer make it easier to diagnose what carriage and what is wrong?

Yeah it's a lot better, provided the tms is playing ball ;) for instance a passcom. It will tell you on the screen exactly which coach it happened, therefore you or the tm can get to it depending who's nearer. Compare that to a mark 2 coach where you'd be looking for a butterfly valve pointing the wrong way to normal. Now imagine having to do that in the dark and it's at the back of the train and there are football fans on who can 'interact' with you via the droplights!

The Voyager TMS system uses Windows CE. But its not really controlling the train as such as the train can operate with no TMS.

The Voyager TMS computer will likely be interfaced with the various other computers that run things on the Voyager and will be displaying the data in a user-friendly format. How many dials and buttons would be needed to do the job of the TMS?

They're already effectively there as there has to be an indictor of a problem hard wired into the train in case of an enroute TMS failure, i.e a brake fault will light up in the cab. Just becomes a bit of detective work to find the fault.

All the relevant dials and buttons and warning lights are still there. All the TMS does is relay information. Like I said a Voyager can still be driven without a working TMS

Just to clarify about the PA system where some have queried resetting it, if there are any problems with the announcements, it can normally be reset via the cab TMS which usually clear the problem, (in PC terms, it can be like a program that locks up when trying to close it then forcing a close) however if there are no announcements going out, the implications in an emergency situation mean that it has to be cleared via a full trip and reset. Maybe it's ctrl-alt-del but it has to be done.

Thanks driver m - I was wondering if it were the potential safety implication of a non-working PA should the train run into difficulty that may have led to such a move being made

I've been on trains taken out of service due to lack of working PA.

As a commuter you might think k does it matter. Train operators certainly think so and it's the safety aspect they are thinking of.

There was also a time when cars didn't get 30+ mpg.

My 21 year old car returns a real world 58mpg (no manufacturers figures bull) and hasnt got a computer on it so what is your point exactly?

The only electrics on the engine are the alternator, oil and temp sender units and fuel cut off solenoid so if you discount the alternator there are 3 wires on the engine!

I would be very surprised if a train would be shut down and restarted in service just to clear a PA fault. Unless it was affecting the operation of the pass com.
As the PA is a legal requirement with all the Transec announcements then you will be very surprised!

In response to the question about computers assisting in fault finding. It certainly does on the traction I drive. It will instantly show what the fault is and what coach the fault is in. Makes fault finding easier

If the info is correct! ;)

just to add....windows CE controlling a train ? windows has problems with tills in tescos....the last thing id let windows operate is passenger vehicles....
Dont catch an SWT Desiro then, they are running Windows 95 (I think)!

Give me a 455 any day, followed by a 458 (which uses the computer to monitor the train) and then a long way behind would be them German trains.

Slightly off topic but I took a ride from Reading to Bracknell on a SWT service and every time the train stopped at a station the PA said "The door buttons/controls are now activated".

Very irritating and pointless I thought, perhaps something for the benefit of blind or partially sighted people?

Never heard it on any other type of train though.

Thought's anyone?

I think the 444's do it as well? I'm pretty sure I have been on a service this year that did it, and I haven't been on a 458 so it wasn't that
