Hi

I am curious about how the Class 220/221s coaches are lettered, because I was told its not like A,B,C,D for a 4 coach one. Can anyone help with this please?

Thanks in advance

Marcus

220: A C D F
221: A B C D F

This is so carriages A and F are always the cabs. B and E were planned to be built at a later date if demand was high enough, but it has never happened.

Just for further information:
390: A B C D E G H J K

I believe that F and I are being built for a number of them now.

Borh 4 and 5 coach units have a coach F, but I am not sure which letter(s) are missing. I believe this is to allow for the possibility of adding additional coaches, while allowing all carriages to retain the exisitng letters. It also enables the DMS to be coach F on all sets.

Is that definite? I thought 'I' was usually skipped so that stupid people didn't mix it up with '1' The same way that some theatres don't have a row 'I'.

If 'I' is indeed skipped it begs the question of whether the London end driving car will become 'L' and the other first class letters all shifting up one so that standard becomes A B C D E F G - and that is making another assumption that the two new coaches are both to be standard class?

West Coast loco-hauled trains always missed coach A, the rakes started at B (smoking coach) I think they missed out I aswell.

It's not definite. I just know they are getting 2 extra carriages, and so presume they will be lettered in the gaps.

Would make more sense to do it this way, otherwise full scale re-lettering of FC will have to be done.
I am also presuming that one extra will be standard and one will be first.

It's also worth noting that it's not been unknown for 4-car Virgin Super Voyager's to be running, formed of coached A B C and F..

However, i'm not referring to a 5-car Super Voyager missing a coach D, i'm referring to a 4-car set.

Does anyone know if the Virgin Super Voyagers are going to have the coach letters re-assigned, now that the Shop (Coach D) is being shifted next to First Class? (Coach A)

I've seen reformed Super Voyagers formed of F C B D A ..

Virgin originally gapped FC/SC, and they didn't want I put in there. So I would guess Minty that this would continue, and the letters would continue. However, I was under the impression that both new cars were standard?

Anyways, on that assumption the Pendos would become A-B-C-D-E-F-G-J-K-L-M and I think that works quite nicely. 2 seperate groups of letters. Ish.

To OP: see here

There isn't really a point in the gap between coach D and F for XC anymore. They are never ever going to have another coach built for them. A missing coach number can really confuse some passengers!

That's the plan, yes. To reduce the confusion of having modified and re-lettered sets and unmodified and un-re-lettered sets running about the place, it's all being done en-masse after the mods programme is completed.

Whilst waiting on the platform at Edinburgh after new year for an NXEC south, there was a Virgin Super Voyager at the platform that I'd swear was formed A-C-B-D-F.

Which is, frankly, even if there are reasons due to shifting the shop or whatever, barmy.

(incidentally, there's no coach A on class 91/mark 4 sets either)

To go with the confusing lettering west coast have refurned one coach on each of the Super Virmins haven't they? A FC thats FC sometimes and not others or some crap like that, when its going to one destination the coach is in use as FC and when its off somewhere else its a standard coach. The mind is baffled.

The 225s are: B C D E F H K L M :)

I think the DVTs are P, but im not sure about that.

That's the one! I knew the shop coach was H, and so it made sense for G to appear before it, but that would make it one coach too long!

Any idea why they decided to give G a miss?

And yes DVT is P.

Yes, you're certainly right..

Coach A is First Class as normal, but coach D (next to FC after the re-marshalling) is also First Class on Super Voyagers working services to/from London Euston.

The majority of Super Voyagers services to/from London Euston, are to/from Chester or beyond, although there are also a handful to/from Lancaster as well.

The easiest way to put it, is that if the Super Voyager is running between Birmingham New Street, and Preston/Carlisle/ Edinburgh or Glasgow, the extra portion of FC seating next to the shop is declassified.
