Hello I was wandering if volunteering was a good way of getting into working on the railways? Do they take volunteers at all ? Thanks

British Transport Police has volunteers, as Specials Constables and in non-enforcement, support roles. It would be a good thing to have on your CV.

Station adopter groups, but these tend to be retired people and don't know anyone who has got a job off the back off doing this.

If you have good contacts at a TOC or two, you can always ask nicely to see if you can volunteer with them. More times than not, particularly if it isn't safety critical, they and their managers would be more than happy to allow you! I volunteered for a rail company a long time ago for a year in an office based role on certain days of the week and picked up good references and a lot of experience too!

And if you don't have any contacts within the rail industry, is an email to the relevant department of a TOC likely to be the next best route?
