Void days automatic?

Are void days supposed to be given automatically when renewing a season ticket? The SWT passengers charter seems to imply they will, but I had to ask when renewing my Gold Card at Guildford. Since it saved over fifty quid, I'm glad I did!

Yes, they should be. SWT are not very good at giving them, I had to point out that my journey (an FGW priced flow) was entitled to a 5% discount this time. This caused much consternation and telling me that it was up to FGW to tell them if it was due (not true) but eventually I was given the discount.

Thanks. The salesperson, while helpful, had to look up the number of void days. I doubt that , just before Christmas, I was the first annual renewal she had done.

What TOC's/routes have void days. Knowing this could wipe many of the rises out.

Void days add validity to a new ticket or give you a partial refund on the relevant ticket, reliability and punctuality discounts reduce the cost of the new ticket, provided it is for the same route and valid for a period no longer than the old ticket.

For renewals between 19th December 2010 and 15th January 2011, First Scotrail have Void Days on most routes for this period (16 Nov - 13 Dec IIRC), whilst First Transpennine Express, Virgin Trains and South West Trains have Void Days on all routes for the current period and further days from before that, but they vary by route and operator. You can only receive Voids Days for days when you held a valid season ticket.

I don't think the TOCs have to give them unless you claim them. All TOCs that do not operate delay repay schemes, must show Void days and discounts at relevant stations in Punctuallity and Reliability posters, they are required to be shown as part of their franchise commitment.

Scotrail are also offering money back if you dont renew you season ticket which is a good thing that I haven't seen before. But I suppose considering some routes had no trains (or replacement buses) for at least a week then it should be the least they do!

That is quite a generalisation, some stations are not so good but there are plenty of stations where you have no problems being offered the appropriate paperwork etc, I know for a fact that we were quite proactive with Void Day paperwork today.

My annual Batley - Manchester season ticket expires on 5th April and according to the FTPE posters there will be 10 void days. Between 6th April and 4th May I'm only travelling 8 days so I'll leave it until May 5th before renewing and instead buy one weekly and 3 dailies.

As effectively I'm not renewing my ticket I would like to claim my 10 void days back as a refund to go towards the cost of those 'ad-hoc' tickets. Can anyone tell me how this will be calculated? I phoned FTPE and the assistant thought it would be 10/260 of the ticket price but was really not sure about it.

I know I could add these 10 days on the end of my next ticket, but as I have a season ticket loan from work I quite like the idea of having a month without having to fork out for travel.

Yearly - Divide ticket cost by 260 and multiply by the number of days declared void
Monthly - Divide ticket cost by 22 and multiply by the number of days declared void
Weekly - Divide ticket cost by 5 and multiply by the number of days declared void.

All other periods - calculate the number of days (each whole month = 22 days, each whole week = 5 days, every other day = 1 day), then divide ticket cost by this number and multiply by the number of days declared void.
