Hello,

Planning a visit to view Toton depot. I am sure there must be someone here who knows where to park the car and where to go (legally of course) in order to get the best views. Can anyone help please?

To the south of the depot area is Toton South Junction. This is not far from Asda and there are a number of car parks(including Asda's obviously intended for customers) in this area. If you follow the pathway northwards from Asda, keeping to the right hand pathway you will reach a pedestrian footbridge which spans the junction.Good views of the junction area from here.
Follow the footpath from the bridge with the old wagon works to your left and head towards the famous "Toton Bank". There are a couple of footpaths leading up the bank (be warned that the paths that run along the bank get muddy when wet(especially when the weekend horse riders have had their fun !).The top of the bank offers excellent views of the depot and North,Old and New Bank Yards. Binoculars will be required for those items towards the back of the depot or for anything else if your eyesight's not too good !.
You can, after leaving northwards from Asda veer left and follow a pathway which runs parallel to the North Yard, although not alot can be viewed nowadays due to the virtual quarry.
If your coming from the Sandiacre (north) end, parking is more restricted and you will need to head down Bessell Lane to get to the Bank. You can park in some of the side roads.

The best view is from the bank on the opposite side of the main line from the depot itself (take a pair of binoculars). If you take a look at the map at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=449179&Y=335083&A=Y&Z=110 , then I'd suggest parking near the roundabout on Banks Road and then walking along the path (dotted line) from there.

Be careful of ASDA parking, they do check for customer parking only. Tesco, opposite would be better!

Out of interest, is it possible to visit Toton Depot using Public Transport? I assume the nearest stations are Attenborough or Long Eaton...

Bus service i4 runs Derby-Notts via Sandiacre. A short walk to the depot/bank from there.

Back in July 1998ish, I had been to Barrow Hill for their opening. I then got a lift back home and our driver said that he hadn't been to Toton for years so we made a small diversion. I was expecting to park up somewhere and get the binoculars out. Nope. He just drove right into the depot itself, swung round in the car park and straight back out again with myself frantically writing numbers! This was a Saturday afternoon and we didn't see anyone on the way in, although we did pass a couple of staff on the way back who just laughed and waved us out again.

There's no way that could happen now, I still can't understand how we got away with it then!
