My wife and I are visiting Paris in a couple of weeks time, arriving Monday early afternoon and departing Thursday morning. Eurostar tickets have been booked for sometime, but I'm looking for advice on what is best to buy in terms of Metro tickets - and where/how to buy them.

Any advice is welcome.

Their Oyster-equivalent is a Navigo card. You can load a card with N single journeys in advance, up to 10 maybe. On the Eurostar train the buffet car will sell you a Navigo card preloaded with 2 journeys for (I think) Euro 7.85. I did this and it worked fine, my wife had a Navigo card left over from a previous visit. The alternative is to buy Navigo cards at Gard du Nord on arrival, but only some ticket machines will sell you a new Navigo (most machines will top up an existing one). I think that might be a slightly cheaper option but will take a bit more time. The website seat61.com has more detailed advice. Each time you use a Navigo a screen on the ticket gate tells you how many trips you have left. One warning: you need to pass through the barrier swiftly: my wife wasn't quite fast enough and her wheely bag which was trailing behind got briefly trapped by the rather enthusiastic gate.

Another warning: getting through security at St.Pancras was much swifter and easier than we expected but in contrast the Eurostar terminal at Gare du Nord was totally chaotic, with queues in all directions, egates for passports not working, awful baggage conveyor for x-raying baggage, and in general almost complete disfunction. Get there in plenty of time.

As for what to use in Paris on RATP-or more: will all depend on how often, how far.
The Navigo will want you to get a customercard with foto made-and hence takes time&effort (but valid for 5 yrs).
The ´iconic´ or labelled as such cardbd-with magn stripe- single use metro tickets, in the also ´iconic´ Carnet=pack of 10 will do for just inner city not too many trips-valid on all transpo in the zone.

I'd be surprised if the cardboard carnets are still available anywhere.

However, if your phone has NFC, then you can buy tickets on your phone directly without needing a Navigo card (the card is €2). You can buy singles for €2.15, or a carnet for €17.35, or a day pass for €8.65 (more if you need more zones). Each person will need their own phone or Navigo card.

There is no need for the photo one

If you want to avoid hassle, get a card loaded from the Eurostar café and then load as needed (you can load a physical card from your phone as well), or use the smartphone app

If you are anticipating a lot of metro or RER trips there is a weekly ticket for 30.75 Euros for zones 1-5 which allows you to travel well outside the city to Versailles or Auvers-sur-Oise where Van Gogh lived for instance. It will probably not be worth it if you are only doing a few trips in the centre.

I loaded it onto an Android phone last time I went and you need to upload a selfie too. Not sure if Apple phones can be used.

Used my iPhone to get around Paris last weekend, dead easy. Didn’t even need to unlock/authenticate, once the Navigo was loaded up just tap it on the readers and it works via their express transit mode.

With an iPhone you don’t even need to download an app now, just go into Wallet and tap “+” at the top right and follow the prompts to add and load a virtual Navigo card.
