Visiting Alexandra Palace

Going to a model engineering exhibition in the new year and need to get from London Euston to the venue itself.

Seems that there are a few alternatives of underground/underground but nothing direct.

Unless I have missed something?

Closest is Ally Pally Station on FCC WGC/Hertford services. There's a bus too, but can't recall where it stops.

Looking at the exhibition site it appears they are running the free shuttle bus from Wood Green Tube station and Alexandra Palace FCC station- unfortunately you can't get to either direct from Euston!

There's also the W3 service Bus (runs from Finsbury Park).

Or, if you're reasonably fit, walking from Alexandra Palace station is fine. It's not far, but it is steep! It's the option I usually use. Still got to get to Kings Cross first- I recommend walking from Euston too.

Wood Green is only one tube change from Euston and if you change at Finsbury Park, you can avoid the change at Kings Cross St Pancras

Just a Query but am i right in thinking the Wood Green Shuttle is one of the few High Floor operated buses in the Capital? i used it in May and it was N Plate Olympians N13-YRW batch from memory although hardly vandalised by london standards.

Thanks for the responses, will catch tube from Euston to Highbury & Islington (Victoria line) then overground to Alexandra Palace, followed by a walk.

Note that that will only work Mondays to Fridays – National Rail trains via Alexandra Palace don't run through Highbury at weekends or in the late evenings; instead they operate from Kings Cross.

Please... not another extension of the Northern Line! I get way too many impromptu questions from tourists regarding its route already!

Any other method of - or plan for - reopening the line is welcome!

FWIW, Palace Gates was a completely different station, on a GER branch line from Seven Sisters. The Northern line route was to be to the GNR Alexandra Palace station. (The current Alexandra Palace station on the ECML used to be called Wood Green.)

I drive them on those Ally Pally shuttles and various other services in and around London. In fact, I was on the job a few weeks ago for the Jack White concert and loads of people were taking photographs because I set the blinds to show "Jack White." Wonderful feeling it is to drive them too compared to some of the newer buses I've had. Quite a few relics from last century do come out of the woodwork for rail replacement jobs, but only a trickle now due to the LEZ.

Looks like they're using different buses for this particular exhibition however.

If Northen City was to return to LU, it would be labelled as a new line, as the current Northern is due to split eventually. Although I see NCL being extended somewhat like this.

Although the DLR has aspirations to extend westwards from Bank to the West End, IMHO the logical extension should be to link the DLR at Bank with the NCL at Moorgate.

Bank DLR and the NCL are roughly on a north-south alignment: DLR being below the Northern line at Bank, NCL being above the Northern line at Moorgate. There is a significant difference in depth, but the DLR should have no problem in handling the gradient. Plus, of course, the NCL tunnels should be big enough to accommodate DLR trains (albeit without an emergency side platform). And a DLR-style light rail service would be perfect for the old Alexandra Palace branch.

The shuttle bus is £1 for the outward, free for the return and if you're lucky you get taken back to the 1990s in a comfortable bus with bench seats, spiral steps and repsonsive acceleration. All things of the past in London unless you count the NB4L...

That'll take rather longer than going to Wood Green and taking the courtesy bus.

You've forgotten the demand for the proposed Battersea extension on the A.P. Line!

A good example of the kind of "snare" that prompted my original post.

Otherwise, just a little surprised that getting from a major London railway station to a major London venue, by public transport, is verging on the "bit of a faff" territory.

The bus takes less than 5 minutes to get to Alexandra Palace station, or a few more minutes to get to Finsbury Park, where there are direct trains to London 7 days a week.

Alexandra Palace isn't too bad - especially on the way home. You can walk down the hill in about 5 minutes to the station and get on a train to Kings Cross and change there for just about all of London - easy!

On the way up due to the hill the walk is a bit longer but still vaguely doable - if not there are bus stops on the hill :P
