seems to be a blow up of qualified roles around the midlands at the moment with Virgin, East midlands and now Cross country as well

Seeing the title, I did wonder at first why Virgin were employing feral canines on their trains...
(I have overheard the briefest of conversations which did indeed seem to confirm that this was quite a bit popular, with a fairly impressive geographical spread of people willing to move to go there.)

I've been lucky enough to make it to assessment centre, from what I've heard since the start of this thread there were LOTS of applications so think I've just fallen lucky, to say I was taken aback by the email was an understatement lol.
Petrified about the assessment day now though.

Ah give yourself more credit buddy.....My instructor came up from London Overground and he always told me that's it's that type of driving where you really hone your craft.
We have similar work at our place and even though it can be low speed etc it can be treacherous at time so don't do yourself any disservice. From what I gather there were vast numbers applying so a lot of luck was needed for everyone I'm sure.
Gotta say I'm bloody nervous now though!
I agree with Red2005, I'm based at New Cross Gate on London Overground and you're more likely to be risk aware and honed your defenisive driving skills working suburban routes. Working these routes for years with a slim or empty Safety of Line record works wonders when applying. I can think of 7 drivers from my depot off the top of my head who have moved on to high speed / intercity work in the last couple of years. These TOCs do look upon us favourably, however sometimes it comes down to there being another applicant who already has the route knowledge from driving over the same lines. You have to be in it to win it!

Working on slower routes or multiple stopping work often gets a bad rap but the experience you get from it is invaluable.......doing that kind of work in leaf fall for example is an art form and dare I say almost a talent.
The skillset required should never be underestimated.
