From December we will see more voyagers doubled up

Do they require two train managers?

I think they swap between units at stations. Gusss it's no different to a pacer or 150/1 in multiple.

if I remember rightly

If there is a member of catering staff in BOTH units the TM can move between units (obviously when a train is at a station_

If there is only 1 member of catering staff for whole train the TM must remain in rear unit

If there is no catering staff the rear set must be locked out of use

how do you get that when on a 12 car DOO set there is only the driver right up the front of the first set of 4...

In that case the DOO driver has access via corridor connections to the whole train. Not so on a double voyager.

Not so on a 12 car 365, 321, 360 or 357 or plenty of 8 car formations, yet they run DOO without corridor connections.

Why does the rear set need to be locked out if there are no catering staff? Surely having a driver in the front, and the TM in the back is sufficient?

[speculating]Could it be something to do with the fact the voyagers are diesels so in the event of an evacuation it would need to be done more quickly than on electric traction?[/speculating]

Is DOO used on anything that isn't electrically powered? (other than I guess the 172s on London Overground).

On a recent journey I made between Euston and Chester, which was a double voyager, the TM remained in the rear set, sat in first class after ticket checks and only leaving at Milton Keynes and Rugby to do the doors.

Overground 172s are Driver-Guard Operated, but Chiltern 165s, 168s and 172s are DOO (South of Banbury) and FGW 165/166 units between London Paddington and Greenford/Reading and the Windsor branch are also DOO.

I understand Marlow is the only branch between paddington and reading which us not DOO why is this? Are oxford and banbury stoppers DOO?
Why is reading to Gatwick and Basingstoke not DOO?

As far as I know the section between Bourne end and Marlow has old fashions signalling not compatible with DOO and the reading to gatwick line was never converted when the other former BR NSE western region lines went DOO around 1992 or so I think ,and none have been converted since as far as I know .

170 units where not allowed to run DOO if more than one unit was used on the GEML. The guard was allowed though to travel in ANY unit on the 6 or 9 car trains.
