I was watching the DVD "Last days of the 47's" where it showed a "drag" from Crewe to Holyhead with a Virgin 47 + MK2's + DVT. It said the electric loco was uncoupled at Crewe. My question is, was the the DVT driven on the return? I ask because certain footage on this DVD shows the 47 passing Dawlish coupled to the DVT meaning it had to run round on this occasion, and were the 47's in use here able to work as "pushers"?

47s were never fitted with TDM to enable them to be controlled from DVTs. The 47/7s that Scotrail used had an older push pull system that was incompatable, and the other 47/7s (and 67s) just had a communication system to enable low speed propelling of a PCV (propelling control vehicle) when on mail trains. Whenever drags took place the 47 always had to run around like on a conventional loco hauled service.

I am wondering if a 57/3 can work in push-pull operation with Mk3s and a DVT (the Pretendolino for instance ... which of course would be a "Pretendo-Voyager" then)

Not without modification to either the loco or the DVT, to fit appropriate remote control equipment. 57/3's have no TDM, and DVT's don't have the 57/3 control equipment or wiring fitted. In fact I'm not even sure the 57/3's have any kind of multiple working fitted for the DVT to tap into.

57s have no multiple working, neither did most 47s. A 57 could never replace a 90 and keep anything like performance though, they just don't have the power. Only diesels that can work with DVTs are the AAR fitted ones (59, 66 and 67) which can work with modified DVTs and through wired coaches.
